Route 11

After pulling the plug on Lt. Surge, your next destination is Lavender Town. The quickest way is to go east through Route 11 and north through Route 12, but a sleeping Snorlax is blocking the road. The new Pokémon here is Drowzee, a Template:Type2 with lots of HP and great Special Attack. It's best combo is Hypnosis and Dream Eater, which puts the opponent to sleep and steals its health for itself.

You should still visit the guardhouse though, since one of Oak's aides will give you the Itemfinder (if you've caught 30 or more different Pokémon). If you check the lone shrub near the guardhouse, you'll find an Escape Rope. The last point of interest is a kid on the second floor of the guardhouse who will trade his Dugtrio for your Lickitung.

With Route 11 blocked, you have to take the long way around to Lavender Town. Leaving the guardhouse, walk back towards Vermilion, but take Diglett's Cave instead. Like the name says, this is the only home of Diglett and Dugtrio. Since Flying-types are immune to Template:Type2 attacks, this is a great time to give the Pidgey, Spearow, and Zubat families some experience. This underground tunnel connects to Route 2, emerging between Viridian Forest and Pewter City.

Route 2

Diglett's Cave takes you to the eastern half of Route 2. South of the cave exit is a house; the guy inside is looking for a Clefairy. If you've got one to spare from Mt. Moon, you can swap it here for a Mr. Mime, a rare Template:Type2. Leave the house and cut down the tree to head south. Inside the guardhouse, you'll find another of Oak's aides - this one will give you HM05 (Flash) if you've caught 10 different species. You shouldn't have any problems there, since you needed 30 kinds to get the Itemfinder! Pick up the HP Up and the Moon further to the south, and since it's close, go back to Viridian City. Once you cut the tree down in the southwest area and get TM42 (Dream Eater), trek back to Pewter City.

Pewter City

Back in town, you can now enter the employee-only area of the museum, so cut down the tree and head inside. Talk to the scientist next to the pedestal to get the Old Amber; taking this to the Pokémon Lab on Cinnabar Island will result in an Aerodactyl.

With that done, you're headed back to Cerulean City now. You've got two options: wander through Mt. Moon again, or take the tunnel back through Vermilion City and the Cerulean-Vermilion Underground.

A Fork in the Road

Whichever way you take, there's nothing new going on, so just keep traveling towards Cerulean City.

Cerulean City

This time around, head to the east. You have to cut down a shrub to get past, and now you've got nine Trainers itching to battle here.

Route 9

Fight your way out of the crowd of Trainers, and you'll find yourself near a river.

Route 10 (north side)

Turn to the south and you'll find a Poké Center here, the last outpost of civilization before venturing into Rock Tunnel. If you cut down the tree closest to the cave entrance, you'll find a Super Potion wedged in the rock wall between the cave and the building.

Make sure one of your Pokémon knows how to use Flash, since this is one dark cave! As soon as you're ready, head on inside.
