After pulling the plug on Lt. Surge, your next destination is Lavender Town to the northeast.  The quickest way is to trek through 11 to 12 and then head north, but a sleeping Snorlax is blocking the roadA new Pokémon around here is Drowzee, a Psychic with lots of HP and great Special AttackIts best combo is Hypnosis and Dream Eater, which puts the opponent to sleep and steals its health for itself.
11 features several large patches of tall grass that separate Vermilion City from 12.  To the northeast is Lavender Town, but a sleeping Snorlax blocks the east end of the route, so you'll need to find another way to get thereInside the gate, one of Oak's aides will reward you for catching at least 30 different species with the Itemfinder, which detects any hidden items nearbyNot far from the aide is a kid who is hoping to trade his Dugtrio for a Lickitung.

You should still visit the guardhouse though, since one of Oak's aides will give you the Itemfinder if you've caught 30 or more different Pokémon.  If you check the lone shrub near the guardhouse, you'll find an Escape Rope.  The last point of interest is a kid on the second floor of the guardhouse who will trade his Dugtrio for your Lickitung.

With Route 11 blocked, you have to take the long way around to Lavender Town.  Leave the guardhouse, walk back towards Vermilion, but take Diglett's Cave instead.  Like the name says, the only Pokémon found inside are Diglett and Dugtrio.  Since Flyings are immune to Ground attacks, this is a great time to give the Pidgey, Spearow, and Zubat families some experience.  This underground tunnel connects to 2, emerging between Viridian Forest and Pewter City.

Diglett's Cave takes you back to the western half of 2.  South of the cave is a house; the guy inside is looking for a Clefairy.  If you've got one to spare from Mt. Moon, you can swap it here for a Mr. Mime, a rare Psychic.  Leave the house and cut down the tree to head south.  Inside the guardhouse, you'll find another of Oak's aides - this one will give you 05 if you've caught 10 different speciesYou shouldn't have any problems there, since you needed 30 kinds to get the Itemfinder!  Pick up the Vitamin and the Moon further to the south, and since it's close, go back to Viridian City.  Once you cut the tree down in the southwest area and get 42, trek back to Pewter City.

Back in town, you can now enter the employee-only area of the museum, so cut down the tree and head inside.  Talk to the scientist next to the pedestal to get the Old Amber; taking this to the Pokémon Lab on Cinnabar Island will result in an Aerodactyl.
Now that you have HM01, you can cut down the tree in the northeast part of the city to enter the museum's laboratory.  Talk to the scientist standing next to the pedestal to receive the Old Amber.  Take this to Cinnabar Island to regenerate an ancient Aerodactyl from the DNA trapped inside.

With that done, you're headed back through Cerulean City now.  You've got two options: wander through Mt. Moon again, or take the tunnel back through Vermilion City, and then the Cerulean-Vermilion Underground.

This time around, head to the east.  You have to cut down a shrub to get past, and now you've got nine Trainers itching to battle here.

Your next stop on the way to Lavender Town is 9.  Either travel east from Pewter City again, or return to Vermilion City and head north.  In Cerulean, pass through the burgled home and chop down the tree on the east side of town to continue.

Route 11

Route 11

Route 11 features several large patches of tall grass that separate Vermilion City from Route 12. To the northeast is Lavender Town, but a sleeping Snorlax blocks the east end of the route, so you'll need to find another way to get there. Inside the gate, one of Oak's aides will reward you for catching at least 30 different species with the Itemfinder, which detects any hidden items nearby. Not far from the aide is a kid who is hoping to trade his Dugtrio for a Lickitung.

Diglett's Cave

Diglett's Cave

Diglett's Cave is a long tunnel that spans nearly the whole region, linking Route 11 to the east side of Route 2. Like the name implies, the only Pokémon that can be found here are Diglett and Dugtrio.

Route 2

The east side of Route 2 was inaccessible when you first passed through here. Inside the house is a guy looking to swap a Clefairy for his Mr. Mime, a rare Psychic-type Pokémon. Chop down the tree to reach the gate, where another one of Oak's aides is waiting. This assistant will reward you for catching 10 different species with HM05 (Flash). Further south are two items, a HP Up and a Moon Stone.

From here, you may want to revisit Viridian City to get TM42 (Dream Eater) from the man near the pond.

Pewter City

Now that you have HM01, you can cut down the tree in the northeast part of the city to enter the museum's laboratory. Talk to the scientist standing next to the pedestal to receive the Old Amber. Take this to Cinnabar Island to regenerate an ancient Aerodactyl from the DNA trapped inside.

Your next stop on the way to Lavender Town is Route 9. Either travel east from Pewter City again, or return to Vermilion City and head north. In Cerulean, pass through the burgled home and chop down the tree on the east side of town to continue.

Route 9

There are nine Trainers scattered across the route, so take care. As you approach Route 10, you find yourself near a river.

Route 10

To the south is a convenient Pokémon Center, the last outpost of civilization before venturing into Rock Tunnel. This dark, winding tunnel emerges on the south side of Route 10, just outside of Lavender Town.
