First, make sure to visit the Poké Center to heal up from the trek through the forest. If you've got the extra money, you may want to buy a few Potions from the Poké Mart in preparation for challenging the Pewter Gym.  You won't be able to head east yet, since the kid at the edge of the city will drag you to the Gym if you try to leave.
Pewter City is a quiet city nestled in the northern mountains. Local attractions include the Pewter Museum of Science and the Pewter Gym.

The Pewter Museum of Science is located on the north side of the city.  It hosts a wide range of artifacts and exhibits, with a focus on fossil excavation and space exploration.  Admission to the main building is pdollar50 for a child's ticket.  The second smaller building is closed to the public, but if you come back later and cut past the tree, one of the scientists there will give you the List of key items in Generation I; if you take it to Cinnabar Island, the scientists there can resurrect an ancient Aerodactyl.

For your Pikachu, the first Gym may be one of the toughest. The Pewter Gym officially specializes in the Rock type, though Brock's Pokémon also belong to the Ground type. Pikachu's electrical attacks are useless here, but it can still attack with physical moves like Quick Attack. Use a combo of Tail Whip and Quick Attack if you want to use Pikachu. Using Double Team, which it learns at level 15, will be especially helpful. Grass- and Water attacks would inflict massive damage, but Fighting moves are also effective. If you happened to catch a Mankey on 22, its Low Kick move can be a big help against Brock's Pokémon. If you prefer to use either Nidoran♀ or Nidoran♂ for this fight, level it up to level 12 when it learns Double Kick which should take Brock out.

This could be one tough fight.  While Brock officially specializes in the Rock, both his Geodude and Onix are also part of the Ground.  This means that Pikachu's electrical attacks will be useless, but luckily neither one knows a Ground attack, or Pikachu would be in real trouble!  Grass- and Waters would be best here, but Fighting- and Flyings also have an advantage.  If you caught a Mankey on 22, try battling with that and a Pidgey (or Pidgeotto), and you might just win.

Brock awards you the Boulder, which gives a slight Attack boost during battle, and also enables the use of Flash outside of battle. He also gives you 34 as a prize.

Congratulations, you've just won the Boulder!  The badge gives a slight attack boost during battle, and also lets you use Flash outside of battle (even though you don't have HM05 yet). <br> Brock also gives you 34 as a prize.  Now that you've beaten Brock, your next destination is Cerulean City in the east. Stock up on Poké Balls and Potions before you leave for 3, then it's off to the wilderness again!
With the Pewter Gym defeated, your next stop is Cerulean City to the east. Stock up on Potions and Pokés before you leave for 3.

There are no less than eight Trainers on this route.  You've been warned!  It's worth it though, you'll be a stronger (and richer) Trainer because of it.
3 runs off to the east, ending at the entrance to Mt. Moon. There are more than a few Trainers to fight along the way, so you may need to return to Pewter City to rest up.

The Magikarp Salesman
A Poké Center stands near the entrance to Mt. Moon. Inside is a shady man that will offer to sell you a Magikarp for PDollar500. The fish can do nothing but Splash until level 15, but evolves into the powerful Gyarados at level 20. If you have the money to spare, you can have a strong Water Pokémon that much sooner, but you can soon hook one for free with the right fishing rod.

Once you've made it past all of those Trainers, you can look for some new Pokémon. While you've run into Rattata before, you probably haven't encountered Spearow, Sandshrew, or Mankey yet.  The next point of interest is the Poké Center. There's a shady guy inside near the PC that will offer to sell you a Magikarp for pdollar500. The fish itself isn't a great Water choice, since it can only splash around until Lv 15, but with enough training it will evolve to Gyarados at Lv 20 (with way better stats and moves).  It's up to you if you want to fork over the money for the fish here, since they are found almost everywhere with the Fishing later on.  Heal up your team and head into Mt. Moon.
Mt. Moon is a large cave set deep inside the mountains. There are many Trainers inside who are looking to battle. Many cave-dwelling Pokémon, like Zubat and Paras, can also be found here.

Mt. Moon isn't a very tough cave to get through, especially if your team is around Lv 15 by now.  When you first enter the cave, make a left and grab the 12 and Potion, and defeat the nearby trainer on the way. Follow the tunnel around and take the first stairs you see.
1F
Collect 12 and the Potion to the left, then follow the tunnel around and climb down the nearest ladder.

Look out for the Team Rocket grunt here, that means that the criminal gang is up to no good somewhere nearby. Grab the Vitamin from the ledge and take the stairs back to the first floor.
B2F
The presence of a Team Rocket grunt means that the criminal gang is up to no good here. Grab the Vitamin from the ledge and climb back to the first floor.

Head south for two more Trainer battles, as well as a Potion, Rare Candy, and Escape Rope. These are all handy items right now, since the Escape Rope will warp you back to the entrance if you need to heal up; the Rare Candy can raise a Pokémon's level by 1. Head north and follow the tunnel around to the left, and take the next set of stairs you see.
1F
To the south are two more Trainers. There are also three items lying around, including a Potion, Vitamin, and an Escape Rope. A Rare Candy raises a Pokémon's level by one, and an Escape Rope warps you to the cave entrance if you need to heal up. Go north and climb down the next ladder.

A second Team Rocket grunt is standing here, so get ready to battle!  Grab the 01 from the ledge, and check the nearby boulder for an Ether before returning to the main floor.
B2F
Beat up the second Rocket grunt, then pick up 01 on the platform. Check the boulder for a hidden Ether and return to the main floor.

Follow the tunnel around to the northwest corner of the cave, battling the last two Trainers on this floor along the way (grab the Moon sitting in the corner, too).
1F
Continue along the tunnel to the northwest corner of the cave. Grab the Moon Stone in the corner and take the ladder to the basement.

You've only got two more Rocket grunts between you and the exit, you're almost there!  Follow the winding tunnel to find the only Trainer left, a Super Nerd that claims both of the nearby fossils as his own. After beating him, he compromises, saying you'll each take a single fossil. Like the Old Amber in Pewter City, if you take the fossil to Cinnabar Island, the scientists there can revive a prehistoric PokémonThe Dome Fossil will become a Kabuto, while the Helix Fossil will become an Omanyte. You can't go wrong with either one; both become Rock/Water-types. Since you can only get one, you'll have to trade if you want the second.  Choose your fossil, head towards the stairs, and you're home free... after a couple of familiar Rocket grunts jump you!
B2F
Follow the winding tunnel to the northwest, where a Super Nerd claims both fossils lying here as his own. Defeat him, and he lets you take your pick of the two. Like the Old Amber, the scientists on Cinnabar Island can resurrect a prehistoric Pokémon each fossil. The Helix Fossil will become an Omanyte, while the Dome Fossil will become a Kabuto. Both are Pokémon. Head for the final ladder with your new fossil in tow, and a pair of Rocket grunts appears and attacks.

After the trek through Mt. Moon, 4 will seem like a walk in the park.  There are no Trainers here, and only a small patch of grass to the south.  Pick up 04 from the north side of the route, then head south and jump the ledge into the tall grass (once you do, you can't backtrack through Mt Moon).  If you need to train before challenging the Cerulean Gym, this is the best place to do it.  Once your team is around Lv 20-25, you should be in good shape.

Pewter City

Pewter City

Pewter City is a quiet city nestled in the northern mountains. Local attractions include the Pewter Museum of Science and the Pewter Gym.

Pewter Museum of Science

The Pewter Museum of Science is located on the north side of the city. It hosts a wide range of artifacts and exhibits, with a focus on fossil excavation and space exploration. Admission to the main building is $50 for a child's ticket.

The laboratory next door is closed to the public, but return later and one of the scientists inside will give you the Old Amber. His colleagues on Cinnabar Island can use the preserved DNA inside it to resurrect an ancient Aerodactyl.

Pewter Gym

Pewter Gym

PEWTER CITY
POKéMON GYM
LEADER: BROCK

The Rock Solid
POKéMON Trainer!

Grass- and Water-type attacks would inflict massive damage, but Fighting moves are also effective. If you happened to catch a Mankey on Route 22, its Low Kick move can be a big help against Brock's Pokémon. If you prefer to use either Nidoran♀ or Nidoran♂ for this fight, level it up to level 12 when it learns Double Kick which should take Brock out.

Pewter Gym
The Boulder Badge

Brock awards you the Boulder Badge, which gives a slight Attack boost during battle, and also enables the use of Flash outside of battle. He also gives you TM34 (Bide) as a prize.

With the Pewter Gym defeated, your next stop is Cerulean City to the east. Stock up on Potions and Poké Balls before you leave for Route 3.

Route 3

Route 3

Route 3 runs off to the east, ending at the entrance to Mt. Moon. There are more than a few Trainers to fight along the way, so you may need to return to Pewter City to rest up.

The Magikarp Salesman

A Poké Center stands near the entrance to Mt. Moon. Inside is a shady man that will offer to sell you a Magikarp for $500. The fish can do nothing but Splash until level 15, but evolves into the powerful Gyarados at level 20. If you have the money to spare, you can have a strong Water-type Pokémon that much sooner, but you can soon hook one for free with the right fishing rod.

Mt. Moon

Mt. Moon, 1F
Mt. Moon, B1F
Mt. Moon, B2F

Mt. Moon is a large cave set deep inside the mountains. There are many Trainers inside who are looking to battle. Many cave-dwelling Pokémon, like Zubat and Paras, can also be found here.

1F

Collect TM12 (Water Gun) and the Potion to the left, then follow the tunnel around and climb down the nearest ladder.

B2F

The presence of a Team Rocket grunt means that the criminal gang is up to no good here. Grab the HP Up from the ledge and climb back to the first floor.

1F

To the south are two more Trainers. There are also three items lying around, including a Potion, Rare Candy, and an Escape Rope. A Rare Candy raises a Pokémon's level by one, and an Escape Rope warps you to the cave entrance if you need to heal up. Go north and climb down the next ladder.

B2F

Beat up the second Rocket grunt, then pick up TM01 (Mega Punch) on the platform. Check the boulder for a hidden Ether and return to the main floor.

1F

Continue along the tunnel to the northwest corner of the cave. Grab the Moon Stone in the corner and take the ladder to the basement.

Both are Rock/Water Pokémon. Head for the final ladder with your new fossil in tow, and a pair of Rocket grunts appears and attacks.

Route 4

Route 4

Route 4 is a one-way path that leads down from the mountains. Pick up TM04 (Whirlwind) and a Great Ball before jumping the ledge outside Cerulean City.
