Congratulations, you are now the Indigo League Champion! Your new title grants you access to an area that was previously off-limits, due to the large number of powerful wild Pokémon, known as Cerulean Cave. It is here that the violent specimen fled to after destroying the research facility it was being kept in on Cinnabar Island.

This is a treacherous cave, with not only powerful Pokémon, but a wide variety of species as well. Stock up on Ultra Balls and grab your Super Rod. You'll need a team that ride the waves, and withdraw that Master Ball from the PC. Mewtwo is one tough fighter, even harder to catch than the legendary birds, so if you used it already, you're in for a long battle. When you're ready, head north to Route 24, surf south on the water near the bridge, and enter the cave on the south shore.

Cerulean Cave

This cave is packed with powerful Pokémon. Some are rare species otherwise only found in the Safari Zone, while others are evolved forms of common Pokémon.

1F

From the entrance, surf to the left, grab the Max Elixer, and take the stairs to the second floor.

2F

This floor is an absolute maze, though each section is pretty straightforward. Head to the northeast to find an Ultra Ball. Loop back towards the stairs, walk to the east to pick up a Max Revive, and take the eastern stairs back down to the first floor.

1F

Surf south across the pond to get a Rare Candy. Backtrack to the stairs and head west. Pick up the Ultra Ball, and head south to take the stairs back to the second floor.

2F

Follow the trail to the northwest, and you'll come to a fork in the road. Take the northern trail to find a Full Restore, then follow the southern path to the stairs.

1F

Head south off of the rock ledge to pick up a Max Revive. Follow the trail back past the first set of stairs, and take the stairs to the west.

2F

Follow the trail to the southwest, where you'll find a Rare Candy. Take the stairs to the north back to the first floor.

1F

Follow the short path, and take the stairs to the basement floor.

B1F

Take the trail around to the east, and pick up the Max Elixer. Head south, and surf left across the pond to find an Ultra Ball and a Max Revive. Swim back east across the water, and follow the trail to the floor's northeast area to pick up another Ultra Ball. Follow the path to the south, and ride the waves to the island in the southeast. The final legendary Pokémon is waiting for you.

The master of Cerulean Cave

Mewtwo

Not only is it the strongest Pokémon in the game, but when you find it, it's already at Lv 70. If you don't have the Master Ball, this is going to be even tougher than catching the legendary birds. Like with any legendary, SAVE THE GAME before approaching it; with only one shot, you don't want to mess this up. Most damage you inflict will probably be healed right away, since it can use Recover up to 10 times. His only real weakness is Bug-type moves, so a Pin Missile attack from a high-level Beedrill or Jolteon could prove useful, though his Psychic move can decimate the health of any non-Psychic-type. You may want to dispatch the legendary birds against him, since he is the only thing stronger than the trio. If you do have the Master Ball, than all you have to do is throw it right away; don't even bother battling with it. A good strategy to catch it without the Master Ball is to use Articuno's Ice Beam, Zapdos' Thunder Wave, or Moltres' Fire Spin, since each of these attacks can immobilize the creature temporarily. After all of that, make your way back to the exit (or use an Escape Rope to visit the most-recently used Poké Center).

You have now passed every challenge in the game, though you may still have holes in your Pokédex data. With nothing else to do, all that's left is to complete the Pokédex for Professor Oak. If you manage to finish it, remember to show it to the Game Freak employees in Celadon for your reward.
