The Repel trick is a trick that allows the player to find the most powerful Pokémon in an area. For doing it, the player needs some Repels and a Pokémon at a specific level. This trick works in all Generations.

How to use

To do the trick, the player simply needs a Repel and a Pokémon at a specific level, a level weaker than the target wild Pokémon level.Of course, the player needs to know the higher possible level for the Pokémon and for that it needs a list of the Pokémon in the area.

This trick is possible because the Repel prevents weak wild Pokémon from appearing. "Weak" means Pokémon a level or least than the first Pokémon in the Party. This means that if the player has a Pokémon weaker than the strongest wild Pokémon, that Pokémon continues to appear. Of course, there is a range of possible levels for Pokémon, but only the Pokémons at the same level or stronger than the first member of the Party will appear.

This trick can be sometimes useful to find a specific Pokémon in an area. It can also be use with Pokémon Luring Methods, such as White Flute and the Pokémon March broadcast to increase the probability of finding a Pokémon. It can also be more useful if the player uses a Cleanse Tag, as it as the same efect as a repel and its effect never disappear.

Examples

Higher Pokémon Level (Route 111)

Take for example the desert area of the Route 111 The wild Pokémon list in this area is:

Pokémon Games Location Levels Rate

328 Trapinch R S E Sand 19-21 35%

331 Cacnea R S E Sand 19-21 20%

343 Baltoy R S E Sand 20-22 10%

331 Cacnea R S E Sand 20-22 10%

A colored background means that the Pokémon can be found in this location in the specified game. A white background with a colored letter means that the Pokémon cannot be found here.

If the player wants to find the most powerful Pokémon (of all species) possible it simply has to put a Lv.21 Pokémon in the front of the party and use a Repel.

Specific Pokémon (Mt. Silver)

Another exemple is the Mt. Silver outside area. The wild Pokémon list is:

A colored background means that the Pokémon can be found in this location in the specified game. A white background with a colored letter means that the Pokémon cannot be found here.

The player wants to find a Rapidash in the Day time, which are a little bit rare. To find it, the player simply needs to put a Lv.44 Pokémon in the front of the party and use a Repel. As the only Pokémon in the level 44 are Rapidash, it is sure that the player will find a Rapidash.

Usage

This trick can be particularly useful if the player wants to find a rare Pokémon that is more powerful than the others.

It can also be very useful in Safari Zones, where the player cannot battle with the wild Pokémon and specially in the Johto Safari Zone, where the player can find many powerful Pokémon after meeting some criteria. Those can be separated from the other just by using a Pokémon at Lv. 18.

Problems

This trick can be very useful, however, it can be very difficult to get a Pokémon at the specific level required.

Of course, this trick cannot be used in the inversed way, to catch rare wild Pokémon weaker than the average. This is the case of the Larvitar found inside Mt. Silver.
