Once inside the forest, there are a few areas to explore.  To get another free item, follow the trail to the northwest.  To the left, hidden in the tall grass, is a Poké Ball.  Go back to your starting point, and this time follow the path to the right.  The first person you see won't have anything interesting to say, but the next person certainly will - he's your first non-rival Trainer battle!
Continue north along the path and you'll encounter a second Bug Catcher. After that battle, grab the nearby Status ailment healing item, and turn west into the tall grass. Zigzag your way westward through the trees until you see a signpost. Explore the dead-end to the southeast to get a Potion, then continue west past the sign. Defeat one last Trainer to reach the northern edge of the forest. Leave the gate to re-emerge on 2, and continue north to Pewter City.

After defeating him, continue north along the path, and you'll encounter a second Trainer. After that battle, grab the nearby Status ailment healing item, and turn left into the tall grass. Work your way through the grassy maze until you see a signpost. Here, you'll want to head to the right to grab a Potion, and then back past the sign towards the tall grass. After one last Trainer battle, you'll be at the northern edge of the forest. Leave the guardhouse and you'll be on 2.

First, make sure to visit the Poké Center to heal up from the trek through the forest.  The two houses here don't hold anything important, but the Poké Mart does!  This is the first city to sell Potions, so make sure to buy a few for the upcoming Gym battle.  You won't be able to head east yet, since the kid at the edge of the city will drag you to the Gym if you try to leave.  There isn't much else to do right now, so get ready for your first gym battle!

Okay, Gym #1.  The Pewter Gym focuses on the Rock, so if you chose Bulbasaur or Squirtle, you'll be in good shape. Teams with Charmander may have some trouble here, since Fires are weak against Rock moves. Either way, make sure you've got a few Potions, and enter the first Gym.
The Pewter Gym officially specializes in the Rock type. Bulbasaur's Vine Whip and Squirtle's Water Gun are super-effective against the Gym Trainer's Pokémon, and are doubly effective against Brock's Pokémon. Though Geodude and Onix resist Fire attacks, their poor Special stat allows Charmander's Ember to inflict decent damage anyway. For an added power boost, consider raising Charmander to level 16, when it evolves into Charmeleon. If Brock's Onix uses its Bide move, spend the next few turns using stat-lowering moves, as any damage it endures will be returned for twice as much!

Brock awards you the Boulder, which gives a slight Attack boost during battle, and enables the use of Flash outside of battle. He also gives you 34 as a prize.

Congratulations, you've just won the Boulder!  The badge gives a slight attack boost when in battle, and also lets you use Flash outside of battle (even though you don't have HM05 yet).
With the Pewter Gym defeated, your next stop is Cerulean City to the east. Stock up on Potions and Pokés before you leave for 3.

Viridian Forest

Follow the trail to the northwest to get a free item, a Poké Ball lying in the tall grass. Go back to your starting point, and this time follow the path to the east. The first person you see won't have anything interesting to say, but the next person certainly will — he's your first non-rival Trainer battle!

Continue north along the path and you'll encounter a second Bug Catcher. After that battle, grab the nearby Antidote, and turn west into the tall grass. Zigzag your way westward through the trees until you see a signpost. Explore the dead-end to the southeast to get a Potion, then continue west past the sign. Defeat one last Trainer to reach the northern edge of the forest. Leave the gate to re-emerge on Route 2, and continue north to Pewter City.

Poké Mart

Pewter Museum of Science

The Pewter Museum of Science is located on the north side of the city. It hosts a wide range of artifacts and exhibits, with a focus on fossil excavation and space exploration. Admission to the main building is $50 for a child's ticket. The laboratory next door is closed to the public, but return later and one of the scientists inside will give you the Old Amber. His colleagues on Cinnabar Island can use the preserved DNA inside it to resurrect an ancient Aerodactyl.

The Rock Solid
POKéMON Trainer!

The Pewter Gym officially specializes in the Rock type. Bulbasaur's Vine Whip and Squirtle's Water Gun are super-effective against the Gym Trainer's Pokémon, and are doubly effective against Brock's Rock/Ground Pokémon.

Boulder Badge

Brock awards you the Boulder Badge, which gives a slight Attack boost during battle, and enables the use of Flash outside of battle. He also gives you TM34 (Bide) as a prize.

With the Pewter Gym defeated, your next stop is Cerulean City to the east. Stock up on Potions and Poké Balls before you leave for Route 3.
