Turn the Game Boy on.  After the intro, press A or Start on the title screen and you'll see the main menu.
After a brief cutscene, press the A Button or Start on the title screen to reach the main menu. Option may be used to change settings like Text Speed. Select New Game and press the A Button. The resident researcher of the Kanto region, Professor Oak, appears and introduces new Trainers to the Pokémon world. Next, the player is prompted to select their character's name from a list of preset options, which differs between versions.

You should be able to select from New Game and Option. (You may have Continue as a selection; this is if you have already started and saved a game on this cartridge.)

Moving the cursor to Option and pressing A will show three topics.  You don't need to touch them, but it's a good idea to put the Text Speed to Fast.  Go down to Cancel and press A, and you'll be back on the main menu.  Select New Game and press A.

If you don't want any of the preset names, go to New Name and press A. Here it's a simple case of moving around to the letter you want and pressing A to select it. To remove the last letter, press B. Once you're done entering your name, select End in the bottom right corner or press START. This stumped a lot of people when the game was first released.
To use a different name, move the cursor to New Name and press the A Button. On this screen, pressing the A Button will select a letter while pressing the B Button will delete the previous one. A custom name may be up to seven characters long. When ready, press Start or select End in the bottom-right corner.

Now you are introduced to your rival! Choose his name in the same way, and you'll be teleported off to Pallet Town!
Next, Professor Oak introduces Blue, who happens to be your rival. The professor is having trouble remembering the boy's name, and asks if you might know. Choose his name from a different list of preset names, or select a new one. With that done, the player is transported into the world of Pokémon to begin their adventure!

You start the game in your bedroom, sitting in front of a SNES. Now it's time to get used to the controls:
The journey begins in Pallet Town, in the southwest part of the Kanto region. It is a rather small, sleepy town with only three buildings. The western house belongs to you and Mom, while the eastern one is home to Blue and his sister. The large building to the south is Professor Oak's Laboratory. The north part of town leads to the tall grasses of 1, and the waters to the south open up to 21.

* The D-Pad (Arrows) will move your character around. Go on, try it! They will also move your cursor around in menus.
* The A button is the game's all-purpose "do" button. It will let you talk to people, push buttons, search things and a whole load of other stuff.
* The B button cancels selections and lets you exit menus.
Available Pokémon
* The Start button opens the in-game menu for you.

The PC in the top-left corner of your room has a use. Move in front of it, face it, and press A.

Your PC is your item-storage system. You can only hold 20 items in your backpack, so if you have too many you can put them in your PC. The system is simple: if you want to store an item, choose Deposit Item and select an item. If you want to retrieve an item, choose Withdraw Item and then select an item. Finally, if you want to get rid of an item permanently use Toss Item and select the item to remove.
Home
Your PC can hold a maximum of 50 items.
2F
The journey begins in your bedroom, with you standing in front of your Super Nintendo Entertainment System. Now that you can control your character, the various buttons and their effects are as follows:

Your PC already holds an item, a Potion. Select Withdraw Item and choose Potion ×1. You're asked how many to withdraw. Since there's only one Potion, you may just press A.

Now how do we get out of menus? Press B a few times and you'll be back in your bedroom.

The PC in the corner acts as your PC. Since your Bag can only hold 20 different items, it would be necessary to use or discard some before obtaining anything new. The PC can hold up to 50 different items. Deposit Item and Withdraw Item allow for moving items between inventory and storage, while Toss Item discards an item permanently. It seems as though there is already an item in storage, so select Withdraw Item and choose the Potion to add it to your Bag. Press the B Button to close the menus and return to your bedroom. To save the game, press Start to open the main menu, select Save, and then Yes. When the menu disappears, your progress is saved and it is safe to exit the game.
Maybe it would be a good idea to save our game now. So with nothing selected, press Start.

Most of the options are self-explanatory. For now, select Save, and the game will ask you if you are sure you want to save. Select Yes. Once it is done saving and the menu has disappeared, the game is saved. You could then turn off the Game Boy and continue from exactly from this point later on.
To go downstairs, step on the stairs in the northeast corner of the room.

Enough of this, let's go downstairs. Walk on top of the stairs in the top right corner of the room.
1F
Mom is sitting at the table, and tells you that Professor Oak has been looking for you. To leave the house, step on the floor mat along the south wall and press down on the +Control Pad.

When downstairs, you see your Mom sitting at the table. If you talk to her, you'll find that she watches too much television, and that apparently Oak has been looking for you.
Oak Appears!
Pallet Town has only a few places to explore, and Professor Oak is nowhere to be found. There is nothing else to do around here right now, so head for the tall grass on the north side of town. Suddenly, the professor appears! He scolds you for trying to venture off on your own, as it can be dangerous without a Pokémon of your own for defense against wild Pokémon.

To get out of your house, there is a mat at the door. Simply walk right through it. Welcome to Pallet Town!
Professor Oak's Lab
Oak leads you back to his lab where Blue is already waiting, and gives you the choice of your very first Pokémon. Each has its advantages and disadvantages, so simply choose the one that you like the best.

Pallet Town is a rather tiny town, having only three buildings. The house you just left is yours, the one to the right of that is your rival's house, and the big building is Professor Oak's lab. You can walk all around town and talk to everyone, but Oak will not appear. Looks like there's nothing else to do but leave town, so walk to the tall grass north of Pallet Town and...

Oak appears! He must have been hiding behind one of the signs or something.

Oak warns you that walking into tall grass without a Pokémon is dangerous so he offers you a Pokémon. Once you're in control of yourself, it's time to decide which Pokémon you're going to start with. Each one has its advantages and disadvantages, and some are more of a challenge than the others.  So, take a look at your options, and pick the Pokémon that's right for you...

* The -type Bulbasaur has the most weaknesses of the trio, with four: Fire-, Flying-, Psychic-, and Ice attacks. Its Grass moves are strong against Water-, Rock-, and Ground Pokémon. Bulbasaur's typing gives it an easier time in the early part of the game, making it a good choice for less experienced Trainers.
* Bulbasaur is perfect for beginners. It can easily mop up Pokémon in the Pewter, Cerulean, and Viridian Gyms, while at the same time being somewhat immune to the Pokémon in the Vermilion and Celadon Gyms and completely immune to the effect Poisoned. It may have trouble with the Saffron and Cinnabar Gyms, but at that point in the game you should have some great Pokémon to back it up.
* The Fire Charmander is great when battling Grass-, Bug-, and Ice Pokémon, but is vulnerable to Water-, Rock-, and Ground moves. Its final form, Charizard, gains a secondary Flying type. Charmander may struggle early on, so it is a good choice for those looking for a challenge.
* The Water Squirtle has an advantage when facing Fire-, Rock-, and Ground Pokémon, but may struggle against Grass- and Electric attacks. It is the most well-rounded of the trio.

* Charmander is the most difficult Pokémon for beginners to use, since it is weak against the types in the Pewter, Cerulean and Viridian Gyms, while only having a type advantage against Celadon Gym. His final evolution, Charizard, is noted for being quite powerful, though it may not usually have a type advantage in battle.
Once you have chosen a Pokémon, it's your rival's turn. He will always choose the Pokémon that has a type advantage against your own. When you turn to leave, he will challenge you to your first Pokémon battle!

* Squirtle is the second-easiest to train. It can defeat the Pewter, Cinnabar, and Viridian Gyms without much effort. However, its movepool is relatively limited, and it may have trouble against the other Waters in the Cerulean Gym.
Rival Battle 1
When battling, each Trainer sends out one Pokémon at a time; both of these particular Pokémon are on Level 5, indicated by the :L5 aside each Pokémon. Below that is the health bar, which shows the Pokémon's remaining HP. A battle is won or lost when either side has no remaining Pokémon with the strength to continue.

Once you have chosen a Pokémon, it's your rival's turn; he will always choose the Pokémon that has the type advantage to yours. When you turn to leave, he will challenge you to a battle. Get ready for your first battle.
Choosing Fight will allow you to launch an attack against the target. Each of the professor's Pokémon have two moves. The first will damage the opponent, and the other will lower one of its stats. If your Pokémon's HP runs low, be sure to use that Potion from your PC. Go to Item to select the medicine and apply it to the Pokémon.

When battling, you'll each send out your Pokémon; they are Level 5, which is shown by the :L5 aside each Pokémon. Under that is the health bar, showing each Pokémon's remaining HP. You win a battle when you take all of your opponents Pokémon down to 0 HP; you will lose the battle if all of your Pokémon reach 0 HP.

Choosing Fight will allow you to choose an attack to use against your opponent. Your Pokémon will have two attacks regardless of who you chose. The first one with hurt the enemy, and the other one will lower one of the enemy's stats. Keep using the attacking one, which will be either Tackle or Scratch. If your Pokémon starts to lose a lot of HP, you could use that Potion we got out of the PC earlier; go to Item and it will bring up a list of the items you are holding. You only have a Potion, so select it and then select your Pokémon. This is the same way you use the Item menu outside of battle.
Once you have defeated Blue, you earn a cash reward of PDollar175, and he will leave. The encounter earns your Pokémon enough Experience Points to grow to Level 6. Leave the laboratory and head north to 1.

Once you have defeated your rival, you will get PDollar175, and he will leave. (Don't worry if you didn't win the battle, you won't lose any money from it, and practice makes perfect anyway.)  If you win the battle, your Pokémon will gain enough experience to grow to level 6.

Now leave Oak's lab and head north from Pallet Town, and you'll be in 1.

Default Names
Game Pokémon Red Pokémon Blue
Player Red, Ash, Jack Blue, Gary, John
Rival Blue, Gary, John Red, Ash, Jack

To use a different name, move the cursor to New Name and press the A Button. On this screen, pressing the A Button will select a letter while pressing the B Button will delete the previous one. A custom name may be up to seven characters long. When ready, press Start or select End in the bottom-right corner.

Next, Professor Oak introduces his grandson, who happens to be your rival. The professor is having trouble remembering the boy's name, and asks if you might know. Choose his name from a different list of preset names, or select a new one. With that done, the player is transported into the world of Pokémon to begin their adventure!

Pallet Town

Pallet Town

The journey begins in Pallet Town, in the southwest part of the Kanto region. It is a rather small, sleepy town with only three buildings. The western house belongs to you and Mom, while the eastern one is home to your rival and his sister. The large building to the south is Professor Oak's Laboratory. The north part of town leads to the tall grasses of Route 1, and the waters to the south open up to Route 21.

The journey begins in your bedroom, with you standing in front of your Super Nintendo Entertainment System. Now that you can control your character, the various buttons and their effects are as follows:

Input Effect(s)
GB 3DS
+Control Pad +Control Pad, Circle Pad Moves character; moves cursor in a menu
A Button A Button Interact with people and the environment; select menu options
B Button B Button Cancel a selection; exit a menu
Start Start, X Button Opens the main menu

The PC in the corner acts as your item storage.

To go downstairs, step on the stairs in the northeast corner of the room.

Mom is sitting at the table, and tells you that Professor Oak has been looking for you. To leave the house, step on the floor mat along the south wall and press down on the +Control Pad.

Professor Oak's Lab

Oak leads you back to his lab where Blue is already waiting, and gives you the choice of your very first Pokémon. Each has its advantages and disadvantages, so simply choose the one that you like the best.

Once you have chosen a Pokémon, it's your rival's turn. He will always choose the Pokémon that has a type advantage against your own. When you turn to leave, he will challenge you to your first Pokémon battle!

Bulbasaur If the player chose Bulbasaur:

Charmander If the player chose Charmander:

Squirtle If the player chose Squirtle:

Once you have defeated Blue, you earn a cash reward of $175, and he will leave. The encounter earns your Pokémon enough Experience Points to grow to Level 6. Leave the laboratory and head north to Route 1.
