With the Slowpoke safe, you are free to challenge your second Gym.  The Azalea Gym is crawling with Bug-types, so if you chose Cyndaquil as your starter, you'll be in great shape.  Other Trainers will have to rely on their Flying-types, like Pidgey and Hoothoot, to get the job done. Rock-types are also good here, so Geodude or Onix are great to use against Bugsy's Scyther, since they are partially resistant to its Fury Cutter attack.
The Azalea Gym is crawling with Bug Pokémon. Fire-, Flying-, and Rock Pokémon all have an advantage when battling insects. Those who chose Cyndaquil will be in good shape, but Grass Pokémon like Chikorita should sit this one out. The Onix from Violet City takes little damage from Bug moves, so use it against Bugsy's Scyther; its Fury Cutter attack doubles the damage with each successive hit, so use Rock Throw to take it out quickly.

Rescue the Farfetch'd!
Azalea's charcoal maker hasn't seen his apprentice since he went into the forest. You'll find him not far from the entrance, and it seems that the Farfetch'd that cuts down the trees for them has wandered off and gotten lost in the forest. It gets spooked easily, so you will have to loop around behind it to chase it back to the apprentice. Don't forget to pick up the Revive nearby. Once it's rescued, the charcoal maker shows up and rewards you with 01!  Afterwards, return to the Charcoal Kiln in town and the apprentice will give you a Type-enhancing item as thanks.

You'll find him not far from the entrance, it seems that the Farfetch'd that Cut down the trees for the charcoal maker has wandered off, and got lost in the forest. It gets spooked easily, so you'll have to loop around behind it to chase it back to the apprentice. Don't forget to pick up the Revive nearby.  Once it's rescued, the charcoal maker shows up and rewards you with 01! If you return to the Charcoal Kiln in Azalea, the apprentice will give you a Type-enhancing item as thanks. <br> Since you already have the Hive from Azalea Gym, you are free to explore the rest of the forest.
Man on a Ledge
In the center of the forest, east of the pond, is a man who will give you 02. In battle, Headbutt has a power of 70 and a 30% chance of causing the target to Status condition. In the field, it can be used on the small trees across the region, sometimes knocking a Pokémon out of the tree. This is the only way to find Pokémon like Pineco, Heracross, and Aipom.

The Green-haired Guy
An Alluring Scent
In the center of the forest, east of the small pond, is a green-haired guy that will give you a very useful TM. Once you reach him he will give you 02, a strong attack that also has a helpful function outside of battle. If you have a Pokémon headbutt one of the small pine trees across Johto, you may knock a sleeping Pokémon out of the tree. This is the only way to find Pokémon like Pineco, Heracross, and Aipom, so put it to good use!
Inside the forest's northern gate, behind the counter, is a woman with her Butterfree. Speak to her to receive 12. In battle, the move lowers the opponent's evasion; in the field, it lures wild Pokémon into battle.

The Scent of Battle
Inside the forest's northern guardhouse is a woman with a Butterfree behind the counter. If you speak with her, she will give you 12. This move can be used in the field to lure wild Pokémon to you. It also lowers the opponent's evasion during battle. Exit the guardhouse to 34.

Route 34
34 is a seaside route stretching between Ilex Forest and Goldenrod City. The Pokémon Day Care is located here, which allows Trainers to leave their Pokémon to be raised by an elderly couple.

{| class="expandable" align="center" style="background: #; roundy; border: 5px solid #;"
This short route connects Ilex Forest and Goldenrod City, but one of the most important areas is located here.  The Pokémon Daycare, like its counterpart on Kanto's Route 5, allows Trainers to leave their Pokémon to be raised by an elderly man.  Any Pokémon left here will gain 1 EXP for every step you take.  However, the Johto Daycare accepts up to two Pokémon to raise at once.  If both a male and female are left together, you may return to find that the old couple has found an egg.  Keep the egg in your party like you did with Mr. Pokémon's Togepi, and it will hatch a few hours later.  This is the only way to get more members of a certain species (like Eevee) and new "baby" Pokémon (like Pichu)!  If you don't have a compatible male-female pair, than track down a Ditto - that shapeshifting blob can mate with almost anything. <br><br> Head north to reach Johto's tech-mecca, Goldenrod City.

Pokémon Day Care
Any Pokémon left here will gain one experience point for every step you take. However, the Johto Day Care accepts up to two Pokémon to raise at once. If both a male and female are left together, you may return to discover that the old couple has found an Egg. Keep the egg in your party like you did with Mr. Pokémon's Togepi, and it will eventually hatch. This is the only way to get more members of a certain species, like Eevee, and new baby Pokémon, like Pichu. In place of a compatible pair, a shape-shifting Ditto makes a great substitute.

Return to Route 34 once you can surf.  Swim south from the Daycare to find a small path leading into the trees.  A trio of Cooltrainers challenges you, and defeating all three gets you a Type-enhancing held item, which strengthens Ground-type moves.

This is the Bulbapedia walkthrough for Pokémon Gold and Silver.
These pages follow the original Game Boy Color iteration, not Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver. The guide for those games can be found here.

Encyclopedia

The Azalea Gym is crawling with Bug-type Pokémon. Fire-, Flying-, and Rock-type Pokémon all have an advantage when battling insects.

Azalea Gym
The Hive Badge

Defeated, Bugsy awards you the Hive Badge, which ensured obedience from all Pokémon up to level 30, and allows the use of Cut in the field. He also hands over TM49 (Fury Cutter), a weak Bug-type move that doubles in power for each successive hit.

Ambush!

Be sure to rest your team after defeating the Gym, as your rival ambushes you on the way into Ilex Forest.

Ilex Forest

Ilex Forest

Ilex Forest is a natural maze. The large, shadowy forest has become so overgrown in recent years that many young trees have taken root. One of these wayward trees blocks the path past the Ilex Shrine. Without HM01 (Cut), no one can reach the other side.

Once it's rescued, the charcoal maker shows up and rewards you with HM01 (Cut)! Afterwards, return to the Charcoal Kiln in town and the apprentice will give you a Charcoal as thanks.

Man on a Ledge

In the center of the forest, east of the pond, is a man who will give you TM02 (Headbutt). In battle, Headbutt has a power of 70 and a 30% chance of causing the target to flinch. In the field, it can be used on the small trees across the region, sometimes knocking a Pokémon out of the tree. This is the only way to find Pokémon like Pineco, Heracross, and Aipom.

An Alluring Scent

Inside the forest's northern gate, behind the counter, is a woman with her Butterfree. Speak to her to receive TM12 (Sweet Scent). In battle, the move lowers the opponent's evasion; in the field, it lures wild Pokémon into battle.

Route 34

Route 34

Route 34 is a seaside route stretching between Ilex Forest and Goldenrod City. The Pokémon Day Care is located here, which allows Trainers to leave their Pokémon to be raised by an elderly couple.
