This is the Bulbapedia walkthrough for Pokémon Gold and Silver. This walkthrough follows the original Game Boy Color version, not Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver.
The guide for those can be found here.

Route 32

Route 32

Route 32 is a lengthy, Trainer-heavy route that stretches south along the shoreline. The Ruins of Alph lie off to the west, but without HM03 (Surf) and HM04 (Strength), only the first of the four chambers is accessible.

Ruins of Alph

Ruins of Alph

On your first visit, the only accessible area is the north chamber. Read the hint to the right of the puzzle picture to find out what Pokémon it is, and move the pieces into place. When you complete the puzzle, the floor beneath you will give way, dropping you into the main underground chamber. Completing the first puzzle awakens the first eleven forms of Unown, from A through K. If you catch at least three different forms, one of the scientists investigating the ruins will be waiting for you near the exit. He'll take you to the research building and upgrade your Pokédex so it can record the various Unown forms.

After obtaining HM03 (Surf), you can then reach the three remaining puzzles in order to unlock the other Unown forms. This also lets you reach the lone patch of grass here, the only location where wild Natu and Smeargle are found.

South of the ruins are two men standing near a ledge. The first gives you a Miracle Seed, which boosts Grass-type attacks, while the man behind the cuttable tree hands out TM05 (Roar). Grab the Potion near Picnicker Liz, and continue south to reach a small inlet. Snoop around the north end of the pier to find a Super Potion, then pick up a Great Ball on the shoreline. Before you can reach the Pokémon Center, a shady man outside offers to sell you a "tasty, nutritious SlowpokeTail" for only $1,000,000. Team Rocket must be getting desperate. Meet up with Frieda of the Weekday Siblings behind the Pokémon Center on a Friday to get a Poison Barb. Chat up the Fishing Guru in the Pokémon Center to get the Old Rod, and rest up before entering Union Cave.

Union Cave

Union Cave, 1F

Union Cave is a small, three-floor cave on the southern edge of the peninsula. Seawater wells up from underground here, preventing access to the deepest parts of the cave for now. Initially, the ground-level tunnel merely connects Route 32 and Route 33, but exploring the basement floors with Surf reveals two more exits that lead back to the Ruins of Alph. On the bottom floor, a wild Lapras appears every Friday.

The ground-level tunnel is a fairly straightforward path. Wind your way back and forth until you see the ladder in the southwest, which lets you reach an X Defend and TM39 (Swift) on the floor below. Grab the Awakening at the south wall, and take the exit to Route 33.

Route 33

Route 33

Route 33 is extremely short, and connects Union Cave to Azalea Town in the west. Pick the PSNCureBerry from the tree, and trounce the nearby Hiker before heading into town.

Azalea Town

Azalea Town

Azalea is a small, isolated town on the south end of the peninsula. Situated between Union Cave to the east and Ilex Forest to the west, the town does not get many visitors. The residents know that something's going on when you tell them of shady people near the Slowpoke Well, and Kurt, the famous Apricorn craftsman, rushes off to help the oblivious Pokémon inside.

Slowpoke Well

Slowpoke Well, B1F

By the time you catch up with Kurt, he's already defeated the Rocket Grunt outside, but slipped while entering the well and landed on his back. As he is temporarily out-of-commission, it's up to you to defeat the other four Rockets to save the Slowpoke.

Team Rocket runs off, and Kurt is mobile again. He takes you back to his house, and gives you a Lure Ball as thanks for saving the Slowpoke. Kurt is the most knowledgeable person anywhere regarding Apricorns, and from this point on, you can bring him any Apricorn to have it transformed into a custom Poké Ball by the next day. Apricorns come in seven different colors, each perfect for a specific type of Poké Ball:

Apricorn Ball Effect
Bag Black Apricorn Sprite.png Blk Apricorn Bag Heavy Ball Sprite.png Heavy Ball Works better on heavier Pokémon
Bag Blue Apricorn Sprite.png Blu Apricorn Bag Lure Ball IV Sprite.png Lure Ball Works better on Pokémon hooked with a fishing rod
Bag Green Apricorn Sprite.png Grn Apricorn Bag Friend Ball Sprite.png Friend Ball Makes a caught Pokémon friendlier
Bag Pink Apricorn Sprite.png Pnk Apricorn Bag Love Ball Sprite.png Love Ball Works better on opposite-gender Pokémon
Bag Red Apricorn Sprite.png Red Apricorn Bag Level Ball Sprite.png Level Ball Works better on Pokémon that are lower-leveled than yours
Bag Wht Apricorn Sprite.png Wht Apricorn Bag Fast Ball Sprite.png Fast Ball Works better on Pokémon that are likely to flee from battle
Bag Yellow Apricorn Sprite.png Ylw Apricorn Bag Moon Ball Sprite.png Moon Ball Works better on Pokémon that evolve with a Moon Stone

With the Rockets gone, you are now free to challenge the Azalea Gym. Rest up at the Pokémon Center, and head inside.
