First, make sure to visit the Pokémon Center to heal up from the trek through the forest. The two houses here don't hold anything important, but the Poké Mart does!  This is the first city to sell Potions, so make sure to buy a few for the upcoming Gym battle. Trainers won't be able to head east yet, since the kid at the edge of the city will drag them to the Gym if they try to leave. There isn't much else to do right now, so get ready for your first upcoming Gym battle!
1 is a peaceful, country road that leads north from Pallet Town to Viridian City. The path is riddled with patches of tall grass and one-way ledges that make northward travel difficult. It is not yet possible to catch any of the wild Pokémon here, but it is still good to battle them to earn valuable Experience Points.

Pewter Museum of Science
The Pewter Museum of Science is located on the north side of the city. It hosts a wide range of artifacts and exhibits, with a focus on Fossil excavation and space exploration. Admission to the main building is PDollar50 for a child's ticket. The second smaller building is closed to the public, but if Trainers return later and cut past the tree, the lead scientist there will give you the Old Amber; take it to Cinnabar Island, and the scientists there can resurrect an ancient Aerodactyl.

The Pewter Gym focuses on the Rock, so Trainers that chose Bulbasaur or Squirtle will be in good shape. Teams with Charmander may have some trouble here, since Fires can't do much damage against Rock-types. Trainers with Charmander would be well-advised to bring a Mankey from 22 or Butterfree with Confusion, since Fighting moves are super-effective against the Rock-type and Brock's Pokémon have poor Special Defenses. Teaching Metal Claw to Charmander can help, but try not to be too dependent on it, especially since the Sandshrew that the Gym Trainer has is a Ground type, which is not weak to Fighting or Steel, and Ground is super-effective against Fire. Bring a few Potions, and enter the first Gym. If possible, try to use special attacks like Bubble, Vine Whip, or Confusion instead of physical attacks, as Brock's Geodude and Onix have very high Defense stats and very low Special Defense stats.

Congratulations, you've just won the Boulder!  The Badge gives a slight attack boost during battle, and also allows the use of Flash outside of battle (once a Trainer has obtained HM05).
Viridian City
<br>

Brock also gives out 39 as a prize. With the first Gym behind them, a Trainer's next destination is Cerulean City to the east. Stock up on Poké Balls and Potions before leaving for 3, then it's off to the wilderness again!

Route 3
Viridian City is a small, nature-loving city that is enveloped in green year-round. It is located between 1 to the south, 2 to the north, and 22 to the west.

When the player first leaves Pewter City to head east, one of Oak's aides stops them, and delivers the List of key items in Generation III from Mom. By holding the <i>B Button</i>, Trainers can travel quicker than they normally could. While still not as fast as the List of key items in Generation III, it's still better than walking.

The next point of interest is the Pokémon Center. There's a bald guy in front of the stairs that will offer Trainers a Magikarp for PDollar500. The fish itself isn't a great Water choice, since it can only splash around until level 15, but with enough training it will evolve into Gyarados at level 20 (with much better stats and moves) which can help with the upcoming Gym match in Cerulean City. It's a Trainer's choice whether to fork over the money for the fish or not, since they are found almost everywhere with the Old Rod later on. Heal up and head into Mt. Moon.
Pokémon Center
The first building you will see is the Pokémon Center. This Pokémon hospital will heal your team to full health and eliminate any status ailments they may have. Each facility also has a PC for Trainers to use, where they can access their Pokémon storage and item storage. As Trainers may only carry six Pokémon with them at once, any others are immediately transferred to storage upon capture. It is a good idea to heal up and save your progress whenever you find a Pokémon Center.

Mt. Moon
Poké Mart
Mt. Moon isn't a very tough cave to get through, especially if a Trainer's team is around level 15 by now. There is also a handful of new cave-dwelling Pokémon for novice Trainers to find. It is advisable to carry ample amounts of supplies such as Repels or Escape Ropes if a Trainer's team is low on health.
Another shop sits to the northeast of the Pokémon Center. This is the local Poké Mart; these stores offer a variety of Poké Balls, Potions, and other items. It is a good idea to stock up on supplies whenever possible, as there is no telling what you may run into on your journey.

Special Delivery
When you step inside, the shopkeeper recognizes you as someone from Pallet Town and calls you over to the counter. It seems that Professor Oak had ordered something that was recently delivered. The shopkeeper hands Oak's Parcel to you and asks that you take it to him. The man is adamant, so you will not be able to make any purchases until the delivery is made.

When first entering the cave, make a left and grab the 09 and Status ailment healing item, and defeat the nearby Trainer on the way. Follow the tunnel around and take the closest stairway to the basement floor.
Pokémon Academy
The Pokémon academy in the city's center teaches inexperienced Trainers about the basics of battle. A blackboard in the front of the room describes the five Status condition that can affect a Pokémon.

As you pass through B1F, you will notice that the only wild Pokémon here is Paras. This is a good training ground for Pokémon who have a move Paras is weak against, but be aware of its Effect Spore Ability, which has a chance of causing a status condition from a physical contact move.
Pallet Town
Oak's Lab
Deliver Oak's Parcel, a custom Poké Ball, to him and Blue arrives a moment later. The professor has a request for each of you: take the Pokédex he invented and use it to gather information on all the Pokémon in the world. This handheld device is a high-tech encyclopedia that records data on every Pokémon you encounter, and will be complete when you catch a member of every species. It was Oak's dream to do this himself, but his advanced age means that he must rely on the two of you instead. To help get you started, he gives five Poké Balls to each of you.

Blue's house
Visit your rival's house before leaving town and speak to his sister, Daisy, to receive a Town Map.

Viridian City
With Oak's Parcel delivered, it is now possible to purchase items at the Poké Mart, and the old man that had blocked the path northward is feeling better now that he has had his coffee. When you pass him, he notices your Pokédex and gives a demonstration of how to catch a Pokémon. Afterward, he gives you the Teachy TV, a portable device tuned to a TV show hosted by his grandson. This program, called the Poké Dude Show, teaches its viewers the basics of being a Pokémon Trainer.

When you reach B2F, look out for the Team Rocket grunt here - his presence here means that the criminal gang is up to no good somewhere nearby. Grab the Valuable item from the ledge, and take the stairs back to the first floor.
At this point, you may proceed north to Route 2, or make an optional detour westward to 22 first.

1F
Route 22
It is not yet possible to fully explore 22, but you may still hunt for new Pokémon. A short way into the route, Blue appears and challenges you to a battle.

Head south for two more Trainer battles, as well as a Potion, Vitamin, and Escape Rope. These are all handy items to have - the Escape Rope warps a Trainer back to the cave's entrance in order to heal their team. When fed to a Pokémon, a Rare Candy raises its level by 1. Head north and follow the tunnel around to the west, and take the next set of stairs to head back down to the basement.

Rival Battle 2
Little has changed since your fight in Oak's Lab, but he has since added a Pidgey to his team. Trainers who chose Bulbasaur should be especially wary, as his Pidgey can deal serious damage to Grass Pokémon with Gust. Use the same tactics from your last battle to wear his Pokémon down and take the win.

After the battle, be sure to heal your Pokémon and stock up on Poké Balls, then continue on to 2.
If you managed to defeat Blue before catching any Pokémon and have no Poké Balls on-hand, you can return to Pallet Town and speak to Professor Oak to receive 5 Poké Balls.

Walk north to pick up a Revive, and then follow the winding tunnel clockwise to the west, where another Rocket grunt is muttering about the team stealing Fossils for profit. Beyond him is a Super Nerd that claims both the nearby Fossils as his own. After beating him, he compromises, offering Trainers a choice between the two ancient relics. Like the Old Amber in Pewter City, there is enough preserved genetic material for the scientists on Cinnabar Island to revive a prehistoric Pokémon. The Dome Fossil becomes a Kabuto, while the Helix Fossil turns into an Omanyte; both become -types. Since it's only possible to obtain one, players will need to trade to receive the other. Head to the southwest, pick up the Status ailment healing item, and take the stairs to the exit.

After the trek through Mt. Moon, 4 will seem like a walk in the park. There are no Trainers here, and only a small patch of grass to the south. There is a pair of Move Tutors on the northwest hill; the left tutor will offer to teach a Pokémon the move Mega Punch, while the tutor on the right would be happy to teach Mega Kick to a Pokémon. Continue east to pick up 05, then head south and jump the ledge into the tall grass (after doing so, Trainers won't be able to backtrack through Mt. Moon). This is a handy location to train before battling Misty. Once the player's team is around level 20-25, the Cerulean Gym shouldn't be much of a problem.

This is the Bulbapedia walkthrough for Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen.
These pages follow the remade Game Boy Advance iteration, not Pokémon Red and Blue. The guide for those games can be found here.

Route 1

Route 1

Route 1 is a peaceful, country road that leads north from Pallet Town to Viridian City. The path is riddled with patches of tall grass and one-way ledges that make northward travel difficult. It is not yet possible to catch any of the wild Pokémon here, but it is still good to battle them to earn valuable Experience Points.

Free Sample

Speak to the man on the south side of the route, near the signpost. He works at the Poké Mart in Viridian City and gives you a Potion as a free sample.

Viridian City

Viridian City

Viridian City is a small, nature-loving city that is enveloped in green year-round. It is located between Route 1 to the south, Route 2 to the north, and Route 22 to the west.

Poké Mart

Another shop sits to the northeast of the Pokémon Center. This is the local Poké Mart; these stores offer a variety of Poké Balls, Potions, and other items. It is a good idea to stock up on supplies whenever possible, as there is no telling what you may run into on your journey.

Poké Mart

Special Delivery

When you step inside, the shopkeeper recognizes you as someone from Pallet Town and calls you over to the counter. It seems that Professor Oak had ordered something that was recently delivered. The shopkeeper hands Oak's Parcel to you and asks that you take it to him. The man is adamant, so you will not be able to make any purchases until the delivery is made.

Pokémon Academy

The Pokémon academy in the city's center teaches inexperienced Trainers about the basics of battle. A blackboard in the front of the room describes the five status ailments that can affect a Pokémon.

Ailment Effect(s)
BRN Burn Attack drops to 50%; inflicts damage equal to 1/8 of maximum HP every turn
FRZ Freeze Cannot move until thawed
PAR Paralysis Speed drops to 25%; cannot attack 1/4 of the time
PSN Poison Inflicts damage equal to 1/8 of maximum HP every turn; loses 1 HP for every five steps taken outside of battle
SLP Sleep Cannot move for one to six turns

Pallet Town

The Kanto region, as seen on the Town Map

At this point, you may proceed north to Route 2, or make an optional detour westward to Route 22 first.

Route 22

It is not yet possible to fully explore Route 22, but you may still hunt for new Pokémon. A short way into the route, Blue appears and challenges you to a battle.

Bulbasaur If the player chose Bulbasaur:

Charmander If the player chose Charmander:

Squirtle If the player chose Squirtle:

After the battle, be sure to heal your Pokémon and stock up on Poké Balls, then continue on to Route 2.

If you managed to defeat Blue before catching any Pokémon and have no Poké Balls on-hand, you can return to Pallet Town and speak to Professor Oak to receive 5 Poké Balls.

Route 2 (West)

Route 2

Route 2 runs northward from Viridian City to Pewter City. Much of the route's west side is occupied by a large maze of trees known as Viridian Forest. Overgrown trees block access to the east side for now. Head through the gate to enter the forest, a whole new area with new Pokémon to catch!
