Once you get out of Petalburg City, you'll come to 104 which is a route divided into two halves, with the Petalburg Woods as a divider. First, you should go to the beach and fight all of the Trainers, to gain some valuable Experience Points. Once you've beaten them all, pick the Pecha and Oran Berries from the Berry trees you see.
Then, you may choose to capture a Marill if you started with Torchic for the Gym ahead.

Petalburg Woods
The tall trees of Petalburg Woods block much of the sun's rays, leaving the interior cool and dark. Smaller trees restrict travel to the western side for now.

Petalburg Woods isn't hard to navigate through, compared to other forests in the Pokémon games. Go eastward (there is a Potion hidden in the tall grass) and get out through the second exit. Pick up the Poké and come back to the forest. Now head westward and take the Status condition healing item.

Eventually, you will see a man getting attacked by someone who is up to no good. You will have to rescue the man by defeating the guy attacking him. Once defeated, the Team Aqua grunt will run away, and the man will thank you gratefully and reward you with a Poké Ball. Afterwards, you can use the north exit to reach the north section of Route 104. You might want to catch a Shroomish here, especially if your starter was Torchic. The first Gym Leader you will face is a Rock specialist. Shroomish evolves into the powerful Grass/Fighting-type Pokémon Breloom at Level 23, so you really should consider it for your team.

Route 104 (North section)
The Scuffle
Deep inside the woods, you come across a researcher from Devon Corporation, a company based in Rustboro City. After explaining that he is looking for a Shroomish, he is suddenly confronted by a member of Team Aqua. The thug had planned to ambush the worker when he left the woods, but grew too impatient for that. Defeat him in battle and he flees the scene, but not before hinting that his friends are up to something in Rustboro. The grateful researcher gives you a Great as thanks. He then heals your Pokémon, and rushes off to Rustboro after realizing what his attacker wanted.

The Pretty Petal Flower Shop is run by three sisters. The eldest sister teaches all visitors how to grow Berries. The middle sister hands out the III when you first speak to her. The youngest sister will hand out one random Berry from a group of eight every day.

*Note: Available Pokémon are the same than South section.

The rest of the trip is simple. After you get out of the Petalburg Woods, you'll find yourself in the northern part of Route 104. All it will take is a short walk to reach Rustboro City. The north end of Route 104 is similar to the southern end, except with more Trainers and items found here. You will also participate in your first double battle. Near the entrance is a Flower Shop. Talk to the girl in the back to receive the List of key items in Generation III, which is a key item that allows you to water Berries in order to grow more than usual from their plants. The girl to the left will give you one random Berry each day.

After earning the third Badge, the sisters will also offer Pretty Petal Flower Shop for sale.

Rustboro City is the third largest city in Hoenn. Each of the buildings were constructed with stone, giving the city an old-fashioned feeling. The Pokémon Trainer's School, Devon Corporation headquarters, and Rustboro Gym are all located here.

Now that you are in Rustboro City, you can challenge the first Gym in this region. But first, there's a lot of exploring to do here. In the far southwest building, a boy upstairs gives you a Poké Ball. The largest building, headquarters of the Devon Corporation, is mostly inaccessible right now. Later, scientists here can revive Root Fossils into Lileep and Claw Fossils into Anorith. In the house next to the Gym, a man will trade you his Seedot (nicknamed Dots) for a Ralts. It's useful if you want to complete your Pokédex, less useful until you get to the Move Relearner, and excellent when it evolves into a Shiftry. The building that is located slightly west of the Pokémon Center belongs to the Cutter, who will give you 01 when you talk to him. It's important that you get the HM in order to continue with your adventure. However, you can't use it outside of battle until you get the Stone from the Gym. Slightly northeast of the Pokémon Center is the Trainers' School, where you can read about Status conditions on the blackboard. If you talk to the teacher, you will receive the In-battle effect item which occasionally allows a Pokémon to attack first during a turn in battle. Finally, you can find Scott inside the building around the lower-left corner, who tells you that he is searching for talented Trainers.

Walda's house
Cutter's House
A sad young girl named Walda lives between the Pokémon Center and the Devon Corporation building. If the proper 'funny' word is given to her caretaker, she will reward the player with a new wallpaper for the Pokémon Storage System.
Stop by the Cutter's house next to the Pokémon Center. When the city was expanding, he taught his Pokémon a move to help clear the surrounding land of trees. He no longer needs his 01, and gives it to you. In the field, Cut may be used to clear away small trees and tall grass.

Devon Corporation
Devon Corporation is headquartered in a large stone building in the northwest part of town. The company is responsible for manufacturing many of the items Trainers rely on every day, including several variations of Poké Ball and medicine. Only authorized personnel are allowed past the first floor.

The Pokémon Trainers' School stands to the northeast of the Pokémon Center. Talk with the teacher to receive a In-battle effect item, and brush up on the basics by reading the notes on the blackboard.

If you go north of the Rustboro City, you quickly stopping off on 115. Follow the path around the beach to get the Super Potion. As you can't buy these yet, this one will come in handy.

When you're ready, head to the Gym in the northeast part of town.

Rustboro Gym
The Man in Sunglasses
Just inside the entrance, you find the Man in Sunglasses again, who introduces himself as Scott. He's been searching everywhere for outstanding Trainers, specifically Pokémon battle experts. He wonders what brings you here to school, and claims that the first thing you should do as a new Trainer is teach Cut to one of your Pokémon. It's a useful field move, but using it outside of battle requires the badge from the local Gym.
You are now free to take your first and easiest Gym challenge! If you have Treecko or Mudkip it should be a breeze to defeat the Rock Pokémon here, and Marill, Lotad/Lombre, and Shroomish can help you if you chose Torchic. If you wish, you can evolve your Torchic at Level 16 and utilize Combusken's super-effective Fighting moves (such as Double Kick, which it learns as soon as it evolves). Be aware that the highest-leveled Pokémon here is Level 15 and can be dangerous. You will want plenty of Potions, and having your team trained to Level 15 or higher is highly recommended. If you're in need of extra training, you can optionally head east to Route 116 and battle a few trainers and wild pokémon there (see below Route 116's section). When you're ready, enter the Gym.

Time for a Trade
The Rustboro Gym beckons, but before you step inside, visit the house to the east. Inside is a boy who is looking to trade his Seedot for a Ralts. Seedot is a Grass Pokémon that eventually evolves into a Pokémon, Shiftry. This one is even holding a Chesto Berry to sweeten the deal.

Rustboro Gym
You can avoid the Trainers if you wish, but they're easy to defeat if you trained enough, and a few extra Exp. Points never hurt anyone. Be warned— from here on out, there will be an actual puzzle in every Gym, and more Trainers.

The Rustboro Gym specializes in Rock Pokémon. Use Grass, Water, and Fighting moves to deal serious damage, and avoid battling with Fire-, Bug-, or Flying Pokémon. As hers is the first Gym in the Hoenn League, this graduate of the Pokémon Trainers' School has opted for a layout that gives novice Trainers a chance to avoid her subordinates and challenge the Gym Leader directly. Use Defense-lowering moves like Leer to soften up Roxanne's rock-solid Pokémon, and moves like Growl to weaken their Attack. As Pokémon, her two Geodude are especially vulnerable to Grass and Water moves, sustaining 4× the normal amount of damage.

Roxanne's two identical Geodude shouldn't give you a problem, although they can annoy you by boosting their already high Defense with Defense Curl. Rock Throw and Rock Tomb can hit Treecko hard, due to its weak Defense. One hit with the move Absorb or Water Gun will take Geodude out. Nosepass will be a threat— it knows Block to prevent you from switching out your Pokémon, Tackle and Rock Tomb to attack, and Harden to raise its incredibly high Defense. It is also holding an Oran Berry, so it can heal itself. Once you defeat Roxanne, you will receive the Stone which will help promote growth in the Attack stat of your Pokémon and also allow you to use the 01 outside of battle. She will also give you 39.

After receiving your Stone Badge and walking out of the Gym, you will see another Aqua Grunt, this time coming out of the Devon Corporation building. He will run off to 116, so use the nearby east exit to follow him.
After the battle, Roxanne awards you the Stone, which boosts your Pokémon's Attack by 10% and enables the use of Cut in the field. She also gives you 39 as a prize.

Now that you have Cut, if you want extra items, head back down to the northern part of Route 104 past the twins you battled earlier and use Cut on the bush by the bridge to obtain a X Accuracy. Continue south into Petalburg Forest where you will find two bushes to Cut to the right of the northern entrance. The girl standing there will give you a Miracle Seed, a held item that increases the power of Grass-type moves. By a ledge to the north is a Great Ball, and if you jump off the ledge to the south, you'll find a X Attack. You'll have to loop around the forest again, but it was worth it, right? Now make your way back to Route 116.
Stop, Thief!
When you leave the Gym, you witness a Team Aqua Grunt escaping from the Devon Corporation building. That same Devon researcher from earlier is close behind, and chases the thief northward. He loses track of him in the northeast, where the city connects to 116.

Now on Route 116, head east and you will eventually find the entrance to the Rusturf Tunnel is. Along the way you can go for the Berries at the top of the hill, with a few Trainers including a few potential Double Battles. You will need Cut to get to the Berries. Fighting all of the Trainers is recommended— training is valuable.

You can find Nincada, Abra and Skitty here and decide to catch them.
*Nincada is a good Pokémon to have in your party with its ability Compoundeyes, which if a Pokémon with this Ability leads the party, even if it has fainted, the chance of finding a wild Pokémon holding an item increases by 50%. Also can learn False Swipe at level 25 and Dig at level 45, respectively (both without evolve). False Swipe is a move that allows you catch wild Pokémon more easily due that leaves them with 1 HP. By last, you can obtain to Shedinja, the special evolution of Nincada, which appears only when Nincada evolves into Ninjask, starting at level 20, and there is an extra space in your party Pokémon.
*Wild Abra have a 5% chance of holding Type-enhancing item which enhances Psychic moves.
*With Skitty, it is necessary to catch at least one of them, for a trade in Battle Frontier (you'll get there much later).

Kidnap!
When you reach the entrance to Rusturf Tunnel, you find old Mr. Briney standing there. It seems that the thief has added kidnapping to his list of charges, as he has also made off with Mr. Briney's beloved Wingull, Peeko!

When you reach the cave entrance, if you communicate with the man by the house, you will learn that the tunnel was originally planned to connect Rustboro City to Verdanturf Town. However, the project was canceled due to the fact that the construction equipment was disturbing the wild Pokémon that live in the tunnel. Enter the cave.

The Take-Down
The tunnel is fairly small, so you will find the thief and his hostage shortly after you step inside. Defeat him, and he gives up the III before fleeing. The old man rushes in to check on his Peeko, and introduces himself as Mr. Briney before the pair leaves for his cottage near Petalburg Woods.

Rustboro City
Devon Corporation
Now that you have reclaimed the III, head back to the Devon Corporation building in Rustboro's northwest corner. The grateful Devon researcher is waiting on the city's east side, and hands you a Great before escorting you inside to meet his boss.

On the third floor, the company president introduces himself as Mr. Stone. He thanks you for reclaiming the stolen parts, then asks for another favor. He doesn't expect you to work for free, of course, and rewards you with your very own PokéNav! In return, he asks that you deliver a III to a man named steven in Dewford Town. To reach Dewford, you will need to cross the sea, so Mr. Stone suggests booking passage with Mr. Briney, the friendly old sailor from 104.

As you leave, take note of the Scientists on the second floor. None of them are having much luck with their projects, except one, who has developed a device that can resurrect ancient Pokémon from Fossils.

PokéNav
The PokéNav is a small, electronic device produced by Devon Corporation under the orders of Mr. Stone, who wanted a way to keep track of a Pokémon's feelings. It has four different functions, though only Map and Condition are available at first.
* The Map page displays a map of Hoenn, along with the user's current location. It's also possible to zoom in to see a basic layout of towns and cities.
* The Condition page shows a Pokémon's five Contest stats in detail. It can be used to search for party Pokémon, or all owned Pokémon at once.
* The Match Call function records data of up to 85 people, including non-Trainers like Mom and Professor Birch, and allows the user to call anyone who has registered their PokéNav with the user. This will also alert the user when any registered Trainer, including Gym Leaders, want a rematch. Only the first four rematches with each Trainer will see their Pokémon rise in level and evolve, though there is no limit on the number of times these Trainers may be rebattled. After entering the Hall of Fame, each Gym Leader will offer a rematch as a Double Battle.
:There are several people whom you have already encountered, that you must seek out and speak with in order to register them:
:* Littleroot Town: Mom, Professor Birch
:* 102: Youngster Calvin
:* 104 (south): Lady Cindy
:* Petalburg Woods: Bug Catcher James
:* Route 104 (north): Rich Boy Winston, Lass Haley
:* 116: School Kid Karen, School Kid Jerry
:* Rustboro Gym: Roxanne
* The Ribbons page displays all Ribbons the user's Pokémon have acquired. Though hidden initially, this function unlocks when any of the user's Pokémon gains a Ribbon.

When you leave the building, you are stopped by one of the Devon Scientists. He adds the Match Call function to your new PokéNav, and asks that you call Mr. Stone as a tutorial.

Rival Battle 2
May/Brendan is waiting for you just outside the Poké Mart. She/He notices the Match Call feature on your new PokéNav, and each Trainer registers the other. Your friend mentions passing Mr. Briney in Petalburg Woods, before asking about your Pokédex and challenging you to a battle.

The Aqua Grunt you encountered before has fled into the Rusturf Tunnel and will disturb the wild Pokémon unless if he is stopped. You will also meet Mr. Briney, a former sailor and owner of the house you passed earlier on Route 104's south section. His precious Wingull, Peeko, has been stolen by the Aqua Grunt. Once you defeat the grunt, he will give back the stolen List of key items in Generation III and run off. Mr. Briney will then show up, happy to have his Peeko back, and will leave telling you that if you need help you can visit him in his cottage on Route 104. Return to Rustboro City.

Route 104

Route 104

Route 104 connects Petalburg City with Rustboro City to the north and Route 105 to the south. The Petalburg Woods occupy the central part of the area. A cottage belonging to Mr. Briney is located on the south side, and the Pretty Petal Flower Shop stands on the north side.

Petalburg Woods

Petalburg Woods

The tall trees of Petalburg Woods block much of the sun's rays, leaving the interior cool and dark. Smaller trees restrict travel to the western side for now.

The grateful researcher gives you a Great Ball as thanks. He then heals your Pokémon, and rushes off to Rustboro after realizing what his attacker wanted.

Pretty Petal Flower Shop

The Pretty Petal Flower Shop is run by three sisters. The eldest sister teaches all visitors how to grow Berries. The middle sister hands out the Wailmer Pail when you first speak to her. The youngest sister will hand out one random Berry from a group of eight every day.

Berry
Cheri Berry Cheri Berry Aspear Berry Aspear Berry
Chesto Berry Chesto Berry Leppa Berry Leppa Berry
Pecha Berry Pecha Berry Oran Berry Oran Berry
Rawst Berry Rawst Berry Persim Berry Persim Berry

After earning the third Badge, the sisters will also offer decorative plants for sale.

Rustboro City

Rustboro City

Rustboro City is the third largest city in Hoenn. Each of the buildings were constructed with stone, giving the city an old-fashioned feeling. The Pokémon Trainer's School, Devon Corporation headquarters, and Rustboro Gym are all located here.

Cutter's House

Stop by the Cutter's house next to the Pokémon Center. When the city was expanding, he taught his Pokémon a move to help clear the surrounding land of trees. He no longer needs his HM01 (Cut), and gives it to you.

Pokémon Trainers' School

The Pokémon Trainers' School stands to the northeast of the Pokémon Center. Talk with the teacher to receive a Quick Claw, and brush up on the basics by reading the notes on the blackboard.

Ailment Effect(s)
BURNED Attack drops to 50%, inflicts damage equal to 1/8 of maximum HP every turn. Fire-type Pokémon are immune to this condition.
FROZEN Cannot move until thawed, 20% chance of recovery per turn. Ice-type Pokémon are immune to this condition.
PARALYZE Speed drops to 25%, cannot attack a quarter of the time. Electric-type Pokémon are immune to this condition.
POISONED Inflicts damage equal to 1/8 of maximum HP every turn. Poison- and Steel-type Pokémon are immune to this condition.
ASLEEP Cannot move for one to four turns.

Time for a Trade

The Rustboro Gym beckons, but before you step inside, visit the house to the east. Inside is a boy who is looking to trade his Seedot for a Ralts. Seedot is a Grass Pokémon that eventually evolves into a Grass/Dark Pokémon, Shiftry. This one is even holding a Chesto Berry to sweeten the deal.

Rustboro Gym

Rustboro Gym

Rustboro City Pokémon Gym
Leader: Roxanne
The Rock-loving honor student!

The Rustboro Gym specializes in Rock-type Pokémon. Use Grass, Water, and Fighting moves to deal serious damage, and avoid battling with Fire-, Bug-, or Flying-type Pokémon. As Rock/Ground Pokémon, her two Geodude are especially vulnerable to Grass and Water moves, sustaining 4× the normal amount of damage.

Rustboro Gym
The Stone Badge

After the battle, Roxanne awards you the Stone Badge, which boosts your Pokémon's Attack by 10% and enables the use of Cut in the field. She also gives you TM39 (Rock Tomb) as a prize.

Stop, Thief!

When you leave the Gym, you witness a Team Aqua Grunt escaping from the Devon Corporation building. That same Devon researcher from earlier is close behind, and chases the thief northward. He loses track of him in the northeast, where the city connects to Route 116.

Route 116

Route 116

Route 116 runs east from Rustboro City. The well-traveled path is used by the workers tasked with construction of Rusturf Tunnel, a project that is now abandoned.

Kidnap!

When you reach the entrance to Rusturf Tunnel, you find old Mr. Briney standing there. It seems that the thief has added kidnapping to his list of charges, as he has also made off with Mr. Briney's beloved Wingull, Peeko!

Rusturf Tunnel

Rusturf Tunnel

Rusturf Tunnel was a construction project by Devon Corporation that aimed to link Rustboro City and western Hoenn to the rest of the region. The tunnel was nearly complete when Devon's president, Mr. Stone, realized that the work was disturbing the local Whismur population. The project was canceled, though only a small bit of debris, easily cleared, remained to hinder travel.

The Take-Down

The tunnel is fairly small, so you will find the thief and his hostage shortly after you step inside. Defeat him, and he gives up the Devon Goods before fleeing. The old man rushes in to check on his Peeko, and introduces himself as Mr. Briney before the pair leaves for his cottage near Petalburg Woods.

Rustboro City

Devon Corporation

Now that you have reclaimed the Devon Goods, head back to the Devon Corporation building in Rustboro's northwest corner. The grateful Devon researcher is waiting on the city's east side, and hands you a Great Ball before escorting you inside to meet his boss.

On the third floor, the company president introduces himself as Mr. Stone. He thanks you for reclaiming the stolen parts, then asks for another favor. He doesn't expect you to work for free, of course, and rewards you with your very own PokéNav! In return, he asks that you deliver a Letter to a man named Steven in Dewford Town. To reach Dewford, you will need to cross the sea, so Mr. Stone suggests booking passage with Mr. Briney, the friendly old sailor from Route 104.

 • The Map page displays a map of Hoenn, along with the user's current location. It's also possible to zoom in to see a basic layout of towns and cities.
 • The Condition page shows a Pokémon's five Contest stats in detail. It can be used to search for party Pokémon, or all owned Pokémon at once.
 • The Match Call function records data of up to 85 people, including non-Trainers like Mom and Professor Birch, and allows the user to call anyone who has registered their PokéNav with the user.
There are several people whom you have already encountered, that you must seek out and speak with in order to register them:
 • The Ribbons page displays all Ribbons the user's Pokémon have acquired.
