Your journey begins...

When you start a new game, Professor Birch will be there to greet you. He will introduce himself and talk about the relationships between Pokémon and humans. He goes on to mention the mysteries surrounding his studies of Pokémon. He then asks if you are a boy or a girl. Choose your preferred gender (it doesn't matter which one you pick, it won't affect the storyline). Birch will then ask for your name. Pick wisely —you will not be able to change your name or gender once you have started the journey.

After reading and completing the start-up screen with Professor Birch, you start in a moving truck. After exiting, you will meet with your mom who tells you to set your clock; after you have done that, you will be prompted to check your desk. You can withdraw a Potion from your PC. After doing this, head back downstairs. Your mom will be watching TV.

She quickly calls you to watch the TV, saying that your dad might be on TV. However, the program ends. Your mom will continue to talk, and you learn that your father is the Gym Leader of the Petalburg City Gym. Your mom then suggests that you go and meet your neighbors: May (if you chose to be a boy) or Brendan (if you chose to be a girl), who lives right next door. When you try to touch the item ball in their room, May/Brendan will appear and talk a little about what they want to do as a Trainer, and that Professor Birch is their father, before leaving.

Upon entering Route 101, you will find Professor Birch being attacked by a Zigzagoon. You will choose a Pokémon from his case to battle the Zigzagoon, either Treecko, a Grass-type, Torchic, a Fire-type, or Mudkip, a Water-type. This Pokémon will become your starter, so choose carefully.

After the Zigzagoon is defeated, Professor Birch invites you to his lab. He talks a little bit about the responsibility of being a Trainer, then lets you keep your Pokémon. He suggests that you go to Route 103 to battle May/Brendan.

Note: Hereinafter, going home and talking to your mom, she will heal to each of your Pokémon, just like a Pokémon Center.

Route 101

Route 101

In order to get to Route 103, need to take Route 101 to Oldale Town. With ledges blocking the way, you must go through the tall grass to keep moving north. Pokémon can be battled, but not captured, seeing as you don't have any Poké Balls yet. It is possible to train if you wish to raise your level to at least 7 or 8 to make it easier to face May/Brendan.

Once in Oldale Town, you can learn about Poké Marts from the woman in an apron walking outside. After telling you about them, she gives you a Potion as a "promotional item". Apart from the Poké Mart, there's a Pokémon Center and a few people who will tell you about certain basic foundations for Trainers. There's also a man blocking Route 102. Seeing as your rival is as powerful as you are, it would be a good idea to heal your Pokémon at the Pokémon Center.

Travel northward up Route 103. This is the western side of the route. There is some tall grass with a few wild Pokémon.

At the end of the route will be May/Brendan. Talking to him or her will initiate your first battle.

After you win, (s)he'll leave, and tell you to come back to the lab. You'll have to walk back to Littleroot Town, but this time you can avoid the tall grass by jumping over the ledges.

Once you get back to Prof. Birch's lab, he'll give you the Pokédex, and your rival will give you five Poké Balls. Now you can catch Pokémon. The general strategy for catching any wild Pokémon is to use your Pokémon's moves to knock the HP of the wild Pokémon to a low level (shown by a red HP bar). Once there, you can use your Poké Balls to try to catch Pokémon.

You can leave for Petalburg City. Before you go, your mom walks out of your house and gives you the Running Shoes. She reads the instructions (hold down "B" while you're walking) and lets you go on.

When you go back to Oldale Town, the man blocking Route 102 will be gone, allowing you the access to this route, but first some annotations.

Note: Remember that each time you buy exactly ten Poké Balls in any Poké Mart, the shopkeeper will give you a free Premier Ball. That is, you will get eleven Poke Balls for the price of ten!

You can find Zigzagoon more easily in Route 103 and decide to catch few of them. Zigzagoon is a good Pokémon to have in your party with its ability Pickup for create items, and because it is capable of learn few of the HM's (the first one obtained in Rustboro City). Also can learn Covet to steal items at level 29 (without evolve) or at level 35 as Linoone (evolving).

Route 102

Once on Route 102, you will face regular Trainers for the first time. You can also find you first set of Berries in the game.

You can find Lotad and Ralts here and decide to catch them. Lotad can help cover the weakness of your starter Pokémon because it is a Water/Grass-type. Whereas with Ralts, it is necessary to catch at least one of them, for a trade in Rustboro City.

Petalburg City

Petalburg City

Once in Petalburg City, you can walk into the Gym and talk to your dad. He'll tell you a little about battling Gym Leaders, and that he won't battle you yet because you're too weak. You will be able to battle him when you have four badges. Wally will walk in, saying that he wants a Pokémon, and Norman will lend him a Zigzagoon. You will then see a demo on how to catch a wild Pokémon by watching Wally catch a Ralts.

After Wally returns the Zigzagoon and leaves with his new Ralts, Norman will then tell you that you should head for Rustboro City to the north-west and battle the Leader there. You'll have to head west of Petalburg City and onto Route 104. On your way out you will (for the first time) encounter Scott, who recognizes you as a Pokémon Trainer, but doesn't feel that you are worthy yet for what he was going to ask.
