Route 207

While there is not much that can be done here until you receive the Bicycle, you can however obtain a Machop here, since it will help with the upcoming Gym Match, especially if you started with Chimchar. At the top you'll see a berry patch which you can't get to until after you get your second badge. If you do not want to risk for the berry patch to eventually fade out after a large amount of time has passed then do not go too high.

Machop should be a definite catch for this gym just to help a lot if your starter dies. Ponyta is one of the few fire types in the region so if you want a fire type early without starting with Chimchar, Ponyta will help you, evolving into Rapidash.

You may enter the mine when ready and speak to Roark. Roark is found in the BF1, and you'll watch him perform Rock Smash and then he'll agree to leave to challenge you at his Gym. You may battle the other workers inside the mine if you want to. Onix is an addition to Geodude and Zubat which can be found here. Onix can be a good addition if you can later evolve it into Steelix. If you can't, then dont waste a half hour on finding it. Then you may battle the gym, or go around the city to talk, train or receive items from others.

"Call me Roark the Rock!"

Welcome to the Oreburgh City Gym. While this is the first Gym there are no puzzles, though it is possible to walk around and not have to face the two trainers in the gym. The two trainers are pretty easy with 1 trainer having two level 10 Geodudes and the second having a level 8 Geodude and level 8 Onix.

The Coal Badge

Roark leads with a level 12 Geodude which is easily OHKO'd by whatever move you have that is super effective against rock which everyone has. If you don't one hit it can Stealth Rock for hazards when you switch into something (as if). Rock Throw won't do anything, but it should be dead before it does anything anyway. His level 12 Onix does have a high defense stat, so it may take two or three hits unless you are using a water type move or a non-resisted special attack. Onix has the same moves as Geodude adding in Screech to drop your defense by -2. Level 14 Cranidos can be a huge problem if you dont outspeed and OHKO, which can happen. It has a ridiculously high attack stat with Headbutt for massive damage, Leer to drop your defense, making its attacks stronger. Pursuit is a solid move that can hurt a lot if you switch and even in the battle itself.

After the battle, you would receive the Coal Badge which allow you to now use Rock Smash outside of battle and you will receive TM76 (Stealth Rock). Now head back to Oreburgh Gate and you will meet Barry again and he would tell you you need to go back to Jubilife City and then go north, to go to Eterna City.

Oreburgh Gate (Basement)

Now that you have the ability to use Rock Smash you can destroy the rocks to reach the basement. The basement is the first place in the game to find a Psyduck, as well as TM70 (Flash), where this former HM can be used later in the game to light up dark caves, though extra copies can be bought in the Veilstone Department Store.

Later...

Come back after receiving the Bicycle to hop over the dirt mounds to receive TM31 (Brick Break). Then after beating the Hearthome Gym and Canalave Gym, you can use Surf and Strength to find the Earth Plate and TM01 (Focus Punch).

Jubilife City

At Jubilife City, Head to the north exit, you would meet Lucas/Dawn and Professor Rowan with two Team Galactic grunts.

After the battle, the Grunts run off. Professor Rowan explains that while Pokémon release an energy when they evolve, he believes it is beyond human understanding and he notes that Team Galactic is after that power. After he and Lucas/Dawn leave, a man from Jubilife TV arrives who gives you a Fashion Case and tells you the TV station is open. You may go inside the TV station if you want where trainers can be battled and a mask of your starter Pokémon will be received. Head north to Route 204.

Route 204

Here, Pokémon can be caught and trainers to battle. Enter the Ravaged Path at the northern end. You can use your newly acquired Rock Smash to navigate through and can pick up TM39 (Rock Tomb), using Rock Smash. Exit the cave and battle more trainers and then go to Floaroma Town.

Later...

Return to both Route 204 and the Ravaged Cave after gaining the ability to use Surf to collect more items namely the Sea Incense, Luck Incense, and TM03 (Water Pulse).
