The old man outside the Gym tells you, "This Gym didn't have a Leader until recently.  A young man from Pallet became the Leader, but he's often away."  Giovanni's disappearance Red and Blue left a vacant Gym Leader position, and Blue had just lost his title as Pokémon Champion to Red, so he took the position at Viridian Gym. He happens to be out of town right now, so there is not much else to do before continuing south to Pallet Town.

Trainer House
The Trainer House allows challengers to battle a certain opponent under controlled conditions. The default opponent is Cal, who uses the final forms of the Johto starter Pokémon. However, if you have used the Mystery Gift function, the opponent will be the last person with whom you interacted, with the same Pokémon, moves, and items. The number of battles is limited to one per day.

One new addition is the Pokémon Academy was rebuilt as the Trainer House. <br>
The Trainer House allows players to battle an opponent under controlled conditions.  If the player has not used the Mystery Gift function, the opponent will always be Cal, who uses the final forms of the Johto starters at level 50.  If the player has used Mystery Gift, the opponent will be the last person that the player that interacted with the player using the function.  Their team will stay as it was when Mystery Gift was used, including held items, moves, and levels.  A great way to earn extra experience and money, but only available once a day.

Before leaving the city, talk to the guy in the southwest field (you'll need Cut or Surf to reach him) to get 42.
The uneven terrain of 1 allows southbound travelers to avoid all but the southernmost patch of grass.

Viridian City

Viridian City

Viridian is a small city on the west side of Kanto. The Viridian Gym is closed for now, and the Pokémon academy that once stood here has been replaced by the Trainer House. Take Route 1 south to Pallet Town.

Trainer House, 1F

Trainer House

The Trainer House allows challengers to battle a certain opponent under controlled conditions. The default opponent is Cal, who uses the final forms of the Johto starter Pokémon. However, if you have used the Mystery Gift function, the opponent will be the last person with whom you interacted, with the same Pokémon, moves, and items. The number of battles is limited to one per day.

Route 1

Route 1

The uneven terrain of Route 1 allows southbound travelers to avoid all but the southernmost patch of grass.

Pallet Town

Pallet Town

Pallet Town is a quiet town in the southwest. Two of its residents, Blue and Red, have both held the Champion title at some point in the past. Professor Oak's Laboratory, where the professor researches the relationships between people and Pokémon, is also located here.

Red's House

Red is not home right now. He defeated Blue to earn his Champion title, but gave up that position with the Pokémon League to continue his training. His mother is proud of him, but still worried that he is alone somewhere.

Blue's House

Blue is away too, but his sister Daisy will offer to groom one of your Pokémon every day, from 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM. Grooming is an important process for obtaining new Pokémon like Espeon and Umbreon.

Professor Oak's Lab

Visit Professor Oak to have him rate your Pokédex. He also asks you to visit again after earning all eight Kanto Gym Badges.
