The appeals round is the round of both Pokémon Contests and Pokémon Super Contests in which Coordinators have their Pokémon use various moves to impress the judges and crowd. Across the two generations of games and anime in which appealing has appeared, it varies greatly.

In Pokémon Contests

In Hoenn's Pokémon Contests, the appeals round is the second of the two rounds, after the visual round. In this round, players have five turns in which they can use five moves to increase their score. Each move can either add hearts to the user's score (appeal points) or subtract hearts from others (jam points). Various methods can increase and decrease the amount of appeal and jam points, including several move combinations.

In Pokémon Super Contests

In Sinnoh, the appeals round is moved to the third round, with the second round instead being a dance competition, and the first being an enhanced visual competition. Additionally, the amount of turns that can be appealed has been lowered to four, and the move combinations have been altered. There are also no more jam points; Pokémon must now make it through contests without being able to decimate others' scores.

In the anime

Buneary and Pachirisu's Ice Chandelier

In the anime, the appeals round is the same in all contests seen so far across all three regions they have been seen in. In these contests, it is instead the first round, an apparent combination of the visual round and appeals round from Generation III's contests, and is used to weed out less talented Coordinators before the second round, the battle round. Though May seemed to have a knack for always making it to the battle round, Dawn had some difficulties in appealing during the early part of her journey through Sinnoh, dropping out of both the Hearthome and Solaceon Contests due to bad appeals. She finally made it through this round in the Wallace Cup when both May and her rival Zoey also competed with her for the Aqua Ribbon.
