Biology
Biology
Physiology
Altaria is a blue, avian Pokémon. Its body and cloud-like wings are covered in fluffy, white feathers. It often folds its wings behind it, obscuring its back. Two long, blue plumes extend like streamers from the back of its head. It has a short, hooked beak and prominent cheek patches, both of which are white. Additionally, it has beady, black eyes. It has a long neck and short legs protruding from its fluffy body. The feet are blue with four toes, three claws forward, and one backward. The tail is made up of five feathers, the outer two being longer than the inner ones.
Altaria resembles a large blue phoenix-like Pokémon with a long neck and white cheeks. The feathers of its body make it resemble a cumulus cloud and two long blue feathers extend from the back of its head. It wraps its two cloud-like wings around its body to keep itself warm. Altaria’s blue feet have four toes, three forward and one backward, and it has five tail feathers, the ones to the sides being longer than the inner ones.

This Pokémon uses its wings to catch updrafts and soar across the sky in a calm and graceful manner. It gracefully glides through the clouds, often while singing or humming in a soprano voice. Its voice seems to have special properties that induce a dreamy state for listeners. Altaria can be very affectionate, enveloping people it has bonded with in its cotton-like wings. While normally kind, Altaria can attack foes with shrill cries without mercy if provoked. Solana has stated that Altaria uses geomagnetic fields to navigate their flight, and any disturbances can affect their sense of direction. Altaria is often found living in List of Pokémon by habitat, though it also inhabits mountain ranges. Altaria has been shown to enjoy water in both the anime and the TCG, although if its wings are exposed to too much of it, they lose their fluffiness, revealing their true anatomy.

Special abilities
Forms
Altaria carries a refined set of vocal chords that allow it to sing or hum in a beautiful soprano voice that causes its listeners to experience dreamy content.
Altaria can Mega Evolve into Mega Altaria.
It is possible that an Altaria may carry a flame sac within its body, similar to Torchic, which it uses to launch Flamethrower in self-defense from attackers.

As of Generation V, Altaria is one of seven non-legendary Pokémon that can learn Sky Attack naturally, the other non-legendaries being Noctowl, Togekiss, the Pidove evolution line, and Sigilyph.
Mega Altaria has more extensive cloud-like plumage, with a large, fluffy mass extending from its back. The feathers have grown as a self-protective measure, and they glimmer with an iridescent sheen. Its cottony wings are more distinct than in its base form, and its blue belly is now exposed. Additional fluff surrounds its neck like a collar, and its head is adorned with a hat-like crest. A single, small feather curls out from its forehead, though its facial features are unchanged. Its tail feathers have grown into a long, wavy streamer, with three longer central plumes. Mega Altaria's singing voice is even more beautiful than that of its regular form. It is known for its sociable personality and is not timid.

Behavior
{| style="margin:auto; text-align:center; font-size:80%"
In their secluded habitats, Altaria are known to sing and hum beautifully with their voices. Much of their behavior simply involves finding a draft on which to glide, high above many other Pokémon that can fly. If it bonds with a person, it will gently envelop the friend with its soft wings, then hum.

Habitat
Evolution
Altaria evolves from Swablu.
Altaria seem to live in secluded areas far from human population such as mountainous regions (contrary to Swablu which live near human settlements) and even sometimes melodious singing, believed to be a singing Altaria, can be heard from far off mountains. Another example of its distance from humans is the fact that the only places where an Altaria can be caught in the wild is in the Sky Pillar and on Unova Route 14. Some Altaria are shown to reside in Forina Valley, and many of them are also shown to reside within the Tree of Beginning. Both locations are also far from human population. During the winter, they migrate into caverns within mountains. They use geomagnetic waves to know where to fly.

Trivia
Trivia
* Altaria is the only dual-type Pokémon that isn't considered a pseudo-legendary or a legendary.
* Altaria is the only Dragon Pokémon that evolves from a Normal Pokémon.
** Altaria is also the only Dragon type that is part of a two-stage evolutionary line.
** It is also the only Pokémon whose pre-evolution and Mega Evolution do not share any types.
* Altaria and Steelix are the only dual-type Pokémon that change their primary type during evolution, while keeping their secondary type.
* No other Pokémon has the same type combination as Mega Altaria.
* Altaria has the lowest Attack among all fully-evolved Dragon-type Pokémon.
** Mega Altaria is also the only Mega Evolved Pokémon with a unique type combination.
** However, it has the highest Special Defense among all fully evolved Dragon-type Pokémon.
* Altaria and the Applin family require only 600,000 experience points to reach level 100, the least of all Dragon-type Pokémon.
** Altaria is also tied with Kingdra for the lowest base HP of all fully-evolved Dragon-type Pokémon.
* Altaria, Vibrava, and Kingdra are the only Dragon-type Pokémon whose pre-evolved forms are not Dragon type.
* As of Generation V, no other Pokémon have the same Egg Group combination as Altaria and its Swablu. In this case, they are included in both the Flying and Dragon Egg Groups.
** Coincidentally, both of these Egg Groups have the same names as Altaria's types.

Origin
Origin
Altaria is likely based on Peng_(mythology), Chinese legendary birds of enormous size, said to travel 3000 li_(unit) in one flap of their mighty, cloud-like wings. They're often portrayed as having a dragon's head and whiskers.
Altaria may be based on a Peng (mythology), a Chinese legendary bird of enormous size, said to travel 3000 li (unit) in one flap of its mighty, cloud-like wings. It is often portrayed as having a fish's head and whiskers. Altaria also resembles a cockatiel, albeit with clouds as wings. Similar characteristics shared with cockatiels include its crest and "cheeks". The resemblance is further expanded upon by Altaria's Shiny form resembling a lutino cockatiel, which is famous for its mostly white and yellow coloration. Altaria's names suggest it may be based on a bluebird and the Draco (constellation) constellation.

The shape of the fluff on Mega Altaria's head may draw inspiration from dutch caps or ushankas.

Name origin
Name origin
Altaria is a combination of alto (Italian for high) or altus (Latin for high) and aria (Italian for air). Ária means melody in Portuguese, which may be related to Altaria's singing abilities. It may also refer to the star Altair, the brightest star in the constellation Aquila (constellation), the Eagle.
Altaria may be a combination of alto (Spanish, Portuguese, and Italian for high; musical Part (music) between tenor and soprano) and aria (Italian for air; musical piece for a single voice). Both words being terminologies used in music relate to Altaria's singing abilities. The name may also refer to the star Altair, the brightest star in the constellation Aquila (constellation), with the latter's name being the Latin word for eagle; or the former name of the star Delta Draconis, Altais, a yellow star in the constellation Draco (constellation), with the latter's name being the Latin word for dragon.

Tyltalis may refer to Epsilon Draconis—also known as Epsilon Draconis—a star in the constellation Draco (constellation), the Dragon. It may also be a reference to the play L'Oiseau Bleu (The Blue Bird (play)) by Belgian playwright Maurice Maeterlinck. The story is about two siblings, Mytyl and Tyltyl (ミチル Michiru and チルチル Chiruchiru in the Japanese translation of the play), who are tasked with finding the "blue bird of happiness."
Tyltalis may be derived from チルット Tyltto (Swablu). It may also be a reference to the play The Blue Bird (play) (L'Oiseau bleu) by Belgian playwright Maurice Maeterlinck, featuring two siblings named Mytyl and Tyltyl tasked in finding the bluebird of happiness. The latter half of the name may be derived from cockatrice, a mythical creature with a draconic or serpentine body and a rooster's head. It may also involve チル chiru (Ryukyuan languages for crane) or Tyl (alternate name of the star Epsilon Draconis, located in the constellation Draco) and Altais (former name of the star Delta Draconis, also located in the constellation Draco).

Altaria (Japanese: チルタリス Tyltalis) is a dual-type Dragon/Flying Pokémon introduced in Generation III.

It evolves from Swablu starting at level 35.

Altaria can Mega Evolve into Mega Altaria using the Altarianite.

Biology

Altaria is a blue, avian Pokémon. Its body and cloud-like wings are covered in fluffy, white feathers. It often folds its wings behind it, obscuring its back. Two long, blue plumes extend like streamers from the back of its head. It has a short, hooked beak and prominent cheek patches, both of which are white. Additionally, it has beady, black eyes. It has a long neck and short legs protruding from its fluffy body. The feet are blue with four toes, three claws forward, and one backward. The tail is made up of five feathers, the outer two being longer than the inner ones.

Altaria is often found living in forests, though it also inhabits mountain ranges. Altaria has been shown to enjoy water in both the anime and the TCG, although if its wings are exposed to too much of it, they lose their fluffiness, revealing their true anatomy.

Forms

Altaria can Mega Evolve into Mega Altaria.

It is known for its sociable personality and is not timid.[1]

Trivia

  • Altaria is the only Dragon-type Pokémon that evolves from a Normal-type Pokémon.
    • It is also the only Pokémon whose pre-evolution and Mega Evolution do not share any types.
  • No other Pokémon has the same type combination as Mega Altaria.
    • Mega Altaria is also the only Mega Evolved Pokémon with a unique type combination.
  • Altaria and the Applin family require only 600,000 experience points to reach level 100, the least of all Dragon-type Pokémon.

Origin

Altaria may be based on a Peng, a Chinese legendary bird of enormous size, said to travel 3000 li in one flap of its mighty, cloud-like wings. Altaria's names suggest it may be based on a bluebird and the Draco constellation.

The shape of the fluff on Mega Altaria's head may draw inspiration from dutch caps or ushankas.

Name origin

Altaria may be a combination of alto (Spanish, Portuguese, and Italian for high; musical part between tenor and soprano) and aria (Italian for air; musical piece for a single voice). Both words being terminologies used in music relate to Altaria's singing abilities. The name may also refer to the star Altair, the brightest star in the constellation Aquila, with the latter's name being the Latin word for eagle; or the former name of the star Delta Draconis, Altais, a yellow star in the constellation Draco, with the latter's name being the Latin word for dragon.

Tyltalis may be derived from チルット Tyltto (Swablu). It may also be a reference to the play The Blue Bird (L'Oiseau bleu) by Belgian playwright Maurice Maeterlinck, featuring two siblings named Mytyl and Tyltyl tasked in finding the bluebird of happiness. The latter half of the name may be derived from cockatrice, a mythical creature with a draconic or serpentine body and a rooster's head. It may also involve チル chiru (Ryukyuan for crane) or Tyl (alternate name of the star Epsilon Draconis, located in the constellation Draco) and Altais (former name of the star Delta Draconis, also located in the constellation Draco).
