Aibo (Japanese: エーたろう Ētarō), known as Ataro in Chuang Yi's translations, is an Ambipom that Gold owns in Pokémon Adventures and his starter Pokémon. As of All About Arceus V, he is level 83 and his Characteristic is "likes to play pranks."

History

Gold, Silver & Crystal arc

As an Aipom

Aibo first appeared as an Aipom in Murkrow Row alongside Gold's mother, who asked him to go wake Gold up. Along with the other Pokémon living there they manage to wake Gold up, who then plays with them. Later at night they encounter a Trainer named Joey who had his bag stolen by a wild Murkrow. Together, Gold and Aibo manage to defeat and capture the thieving Pokémon.

In Sneasel Sneak Attack, Aibo battled against Silver's Sneasel in an attempt to get Professor Elm's Totodile back. Aibo attacked with Scratch and Sneasel blocked it with Protect. Gold then recalled Aibo and used his billiard cue to shoot Aibo behind Sneasel, landing a direct hit.

In You Ain't Nothin' but a Houndour, Gold used Aibo alongside his other Pokémon to battle against the Masked Man. Aibo fought against his Delibird and lost due to Gold not knowing how to handle battling with multiple Pokémon. Despite their defeat, Aibo managed to scratch pieces of his mask off, which later proves to be instrumental in finding out his true identity.

In Tyranitar War, Aibo is sent out to battle against Silver's Tyranitar, but is quickly pushed back by his Sandstorm. Aibo is later used in Delibird Delivery - 2 to battle against the Masked Man again. Aibo manages to defeat his Houndour and Ariados by using Double Team to have them attack each other but is knocked out alongside Gold when the Masked Man attacks them with a barrage of ice.

In The Last Battle VI, Aibo is used in Gold's last battle against the Masked Man. Despite easily being defeated, Aibo manages to send his boosted stats to Sudobo, giving him the speed needed to get the upper hand in the match.

Gold and Aibo

In The Final Battle I, Aibo is used alongside Exbo to fight Guile Hideout. Exbo lets up a powerful flame, which Aibo increases by spinning Gold's pool cue to fan the flames in Guile's direction. Guile attempts to block the flames with his sword, but he is quickly overpowered and knocked to the ground. In The Final Battle VII, Aibo was seen battling Guile Hideout's stolen Battle Tower Pokémon.

HeartGold & SoulSilver arc

In Out-Odding Oddish, Aibo is used in the Pokéathlon alongside Polibo and Exbo. They start with the Skill Course, which ends with the round Snow Throw. The team throws snowballs at their opponents, but Gold commands Aibo to create a gigantic one. Aibo throws it, giving Gold enough points to win the Skill Course. The same three are later entered into the Stamina Course and manage to win that one as well. In the next chapter the three enter the Power Course and go up against Koga, Bruno, and Will, members of the Elite Four. When the match starts Gold is shocked to see his team being defeated by his opponents. At Circle Push, Koga's Muk easily pushes Aibo, Polibo, and Exbo away from it. In Goal Roll, Will's Exeggutor kicks several balls into a goal while Aibo, Polibo, and Exbo fail to block them. In Block Smash, Gold faces Bruno and his Machamp as his final opponents. Machamp does a powerful blow that destroys a whole row of blocks instantly while on Gold's side, Aibo attacks the cracked area in the center, but doesn't do much to the block. He switches to Polibo, but he only manages to destroy one. Gold switches to Exbo next, who manages to break more blocks and is the closest to matching Machamp, but not by much. Gold soon reveals that Aibo is attacking for critical hits on the blocks. By doing so, it sends Gold's team into High Tension mode, allowing him to quickly catch up with Bruno. Bruno tries to fight back, but Machamp's arms have become too injured to be used again. Gold has Aibo leap into the air and send a powerful strike in the dead center of the block, destroying them all and giving Gold the win.

In Pleased as Punch With Parasect, Aibo was training with Exbo to learn the move Double Hit. Soon after mastering the move he evolved into Ambipom, much to the admiration of everyone around him, making Togebo jealous in the process. In All About Arceus II, Aibo is used to fight against Arceus. He attacks with a powerful Double Hit, but fails to do any real damage.

Personality and characteristics

Aibo is one of the family Pokémon that lived with Gold in the house that he grew up in and as a result is very close to his Trainer. Like his Trainer, Aibo tends to be very mischievous and cunning, but is shown to care for others, going to great lengths to rescue Togebo's Egg. Aibo is also very motivated to become stronger and draws strength from watching tough opponents. With his prehensile tail, Aibo can grab objects to be used to help in battle; after evolving, he gained a second one which improves this skill even further.

Trivia

• The English name Aibo is written very similarly to the Japanese word 相棒 aibō, meaning "partner." Incidentally, "partners" is how Gold describes his Pokémon when asked by Professor Oak.
• Aibo is the only Generation II Pokémon that Gold originally had in his house, though one of the Generation I Pokémon he had at his house went on to become the Generation II Politoed during his journey.
• In Gligar Glide, Aibo stared at Gold's Pokédex to view information about Gligar, implying that he knows how to read.
