In Generation I, the Cooltrainers are shown to be carrying whips, which were also used by Team Rocket Grunts at the time. In Generation II onward, they no longer carry whips. They tend to have strange hair colors, like blue, green and purple.

They generally use strong and evolved Pokémon, have a diversified and balanced party, and their artificial intelligence is generally very good compared to other Trainer classes in their games. Like Gym Leaders, they often have healing items, and they also use type advantages to their advantage. They are usually seen during the mid to last part of the game in Victory Road, as they are presumably on their way to challenge the Elite Four. In the Battle Subway, some of them employ a set strategy revolving around the Ability Intimidate. In Generation VI's Battle Maison, they have unspecialized teams that may occasionally include Latias or Latios.

An Ace Trainer (Japanese: エリートトレーナー Elite Trainer) is a type of Pokémon Trainer that debuted in the Generation I games. They are depicted as teens or young adults and can be male or female. The title Ace Trainer is used in Generation IV and onward only; prior to this, the Trainer class was known as Cooltrainer.

They are Trainers who frequently travel around the world to meet new Trainers and take part in Pokémon League competitions.

When paired together in Double Battles, they are called Cool Couples in Generation III, Double Teams in Generation IV, and Ace Duos in Generation VI.

In the Generation IV games taking place in Sinnoh, Ace Trainers have two sets of sprites, with one set of Ace Trainers dressed warmly for the blizzards near Snowpoint City.

In Black and White, some will give out PP Ups when defeated.

In Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, some Ace Trainers appear on top of Surfing Pokémon across Hoenn's water routes.

In Sun and Moon, Ace Trainers keep their Pokémon in Ultra Balls. In addition, certain Ace Trainers possess Z-Rings.

Katie, a female Cooltrainer in the anime

In the main series

Several characters based on Cooltrainers or Ace Trainers have appeared in the anime:

A female Cooltrainer in Pokémon Origins

In Pokémon Origins

A female Cooltrainer appeared briefly in the Pokémon Origins episode File 3: Giovanni as one of the Trainers seen in Celadon Gym.

In the manga

In the Pokémon Adventures manga

Many Ace Trainers make cameos throughout Pokémon Adventures.

In Bombastic Bibarel & Heroic Hippopotas, two Ace Trainers in their winter clothes appear as challengers in the Seven Stars Restaurant, one with a Mothim, the other with a Shellos.

In Deprogramming Porygon-Z, a female Ace Trainer challenging the Battle Castle is shown with her Rhydon.

A male Ace Trainer was shown with his Sawk in An Odd Speech as one of the people listening to Ghetsis's speech. The tutor of the Pledge moves in Driftveil City also bore the appearance of a male Ace Trainer.

A female Ace Trainer with a Zweilous is later seen in the Pokémon League, in Dream a Little Dream.

Another male Ace Trainer was shown giving commands to a Flaaffy in Colress's fantasy in Innocent Scientist.

A female Ace Trainer appears in Kangaskhan...Kangascan't, walking together with a Lass in Santalune City.

Elite Trainer Akira from The Golden Boys

In the Pokémon Gold & Silver: The Golden Boys manga

In Pokémon Gold & Silver: The Golden Boys, Gold fights against a Cooltrainer (known by the Japanese class name of Elite Trainer) named Akira in a tournament in Let's Fight! The Mini Pokémon Tournament. Akira uses a Mareep.

Pokémon

Akira's Mareep
Mareep
Mareep is Akira's only known Pokémon. It participated in the Mini Pokémon Tournament where it managed to get its Trainer to the final round. During the finals though, it lost to Gold's Elekid.

Mareep's known moves are ThunderShock, Cotton Spore, Tackle, and Growl.
