-----, also known as DPBox is a Template:Type2 glitch Pokémon in Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum. It has been dubbed "DPBox" by gamers due to its appearance, a white box with two vertical black lines on it. It has no usable attacks and it doesn't show up on the Pokémon screen. It is always Shiny and at level 0. It is usable without cheating, but only temporarily.

Japanese version

On very early versions of the Japanese Pokémon Diamond and Pearl this glitch Pokémon could be seen when the player has an egg as the first Pokémon in the party and any ordinary Pokémon in the second slot and then enters a double battle.

When the battle starts ----- will be visible and when attacked the game will give the message "But there was no target..."

It will also appear in a player's party when attempting to enter a double battle with two fainted Pokémon, an egg, and a healthy Pokémon in that order in the party. The glitch does not work when using a Vs. Seeker to enter the double battle. When sent out, it will have Bulbasaur's cry and will sparkle as if it were a Shiny Pokémon.

Through the Pomeg glitch

In all Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum Versions, ----- can be sent into battle by battling a Trainer in the Battleground or Elite Four while the player's only Pokémon is fainted. This is possible through use of the Pomeg glitch.

Performing the glitch

This glitch can be performed against the Elite Four or in the BattlegroundWrong template. See Template:Sup/doc. if the only Pokémon in the player's party is a Pokémon whose level is above 40 but less than 100 with a high amount of HP EVs, whose remaining HP is the same as below.

Remaining HP = (HP lost through use of a Pomeg Berry) - (HP gained through use of a Rare Candy after using a Pomeg Berry)

Then a Pomeg Berry must be used, which makes the Pokémon's HP roll over to a very high number. Then a Rare Candy must be used to level up the Pokémon, causing it to faint. The player does not black out. By battling an Elite Four member or a Trainer in the Battleground, the player will send out -----.

Through cheating

----- in Pokémon Diamond

It can also appear when one "recruits" a partner Trainer (such as Riley) and leaves the area the partner is "supposed" to be in using a Walk Through Walls cheat; from there, the player must trigger a wild battle (a common method is to walk on water). This results in the partner (who was replaced by a placeholder partner when the player left the "recruitment area") sending out ----- as a placeholder Pokémon. In double battles, ----- copies the speed of its partner and changes all Pokémon's cries to Bulbasaur's cry. After every attack animation, its HP bar disappears.

To get rid of this glitch, place a Pokémon where it appears to be, that Pokémon will be deleted and ----- will become selectable (if another Pokémon is selected or even pointed ----- will become unselectable again), after that it can be released or placed in a box. If placed in the box, it will disappear when the PC is closed. Be cautious because if it isn't in the last slot when the party is full, the Pokémon that's placed where ----- is will be deleted and ----- will not be selectable. Also, if it is in the first slot, the game will freeze whenever the party is displayed. This is only necessary if a cheating device is used to catch -----, as using it through glitching means is only temporary.

Interestingly, when using the infamous walk through anything code and going into a wild double battle, a variant of ----- called invisible Shiny Bulbasaur will be one of the two wild Pokémon.

Glitched partner Trainer

As was mentioned above, when one leaves the area where one "recruited" a partner Trainer, that Trainer is replaced by placeholder data. The reason is because when the player leaves the area, the game assumes that the player is no longer traveling with the partner and it changes all of the partner's data back to placeholder data. However, the game doesn't know that the player is still traveling with them, so when the player gets in a wild battle, the placeholder Trainer appears to assist the player.

The placeholder's Trainer back sprite is identical to the player's, and their only Pokémon is -----.

Encounter Cheat

When using a cheating device to make it so any number entered in the calculator for the Pokégear will result in encountering the Pokémon of that number, entering 0 will result in encountering -----. If attacked, the game will say that there is no target and the battle will end. It can easily be caught with any Poké Ball, but will not appear in your party or PC.

Invisible Shiny Bulbasaur

Main article: Invisible Shiny Bulbasaur

Invisible Shiny Bulbasaur is a variant of -----. It is usually found in Sinnoh's Oreburgh Mine by cheating. It can also be encountered using the ----- double battle method described above.

Invisible Shiny Bulbasaur always appears at level 0 with 0 Max HP, similarly to ?????????? in Generation III. It seems invisible, but it actually uses the same sprite as ----- but moved off the top right corner. If the player attempts to attack it, the game will assume there is no target and end the battle immediately.

When encountered using the double battle method, it is likely to faint; if the player does not run, then after both real Pokémon have taken their turns, one of the glitches will attack the other with Struggle, causing both to faint (one from damage, the other from recoil). From this method, it can also be seen that its sprite is a duplicate of -----'s, only placed higher for some reason.

Trivia

  • In the American version of the game, ----- appears in Victory Road when the player walks over water with Marley.
  • ----- has been found to display a long name, repeating the last letter that appeared and overlapping three times as its name, before the player's Pokémon is sent out.
  • Walking with a Pokémon in Amity Square is also read by the game as having a partner trainer, and can therefore be used to find ----- in wild double battles.
  • When a Pokémon is used in battle, there is usually a message saying 'What will (Pokémon's name) do?' but when ----- is in battle, the message is 'Wh t ll do?' with small bits of glitched characters in the first two spaces.
  • If ----- is the last Pokémon in the party, and the player tries to add a Pokémon to said party, the Pokémon from the box will have a party sprite with a different color palette. Then when the box is exited, the Pokémon will loom over the box and disappear from the party.
