* This article is, in my honest opinion, certainly the most exquisite article on all of Bulbapedia. I am glad that MissingNo. nowadays is treated as a real Pokemon, even though it only appeared in one generation. Its fame and the fact that it started the entire culture of glitching in the Pokemon games makes MissingNo. the king of the reverse side of the Pokemon franchise - the side involving delving under the skin of the games and revealing hidden secrets. MissingNo. deserves an FA; the article is very maturely written and includes many very balanced and evened-out sections with enough pictures in the right places. It shows true, honest research and gives brilliant insight into the dark world of glitches and the strange unknown of Pokemon. From my point of view MissingNo. is Bulbapedia's magnum opus article, and should win the award to let the community know that the discovery of the MissingNo. species is an amazingly fascinating milestone event in the Pokemon franchise and will be remembered for years to come. Butterfree resembles a vaguely anthropomorphic butterfly. Unlike true insects, it only has four legs, which are a pale blue color. It has a nose-like structure which is a similar color. Butterfree's body’s coloration is a darker purple-blue. It has large veined wings which are white with black markings. These markings can help distinguish male and female individuals. It has large compound eyes which tend to be a reddish color. Like members of the order {{wp|Lepidoptera}}, Butterfree’s wings are covered in fine scales. Its legs are covered in fine hairs which aid in the collection of honey.

A female has black spots on the lower parts of her wings.

The waterproof scales on Butterfree’s wings are loosely attached, and if the Butterfree flaps them hard enough, they will be released into the air. This resulting “{{m|PoisonPowder|dust}}” is toxic, and can be irritating if inhaled.

===Behavior===
Butterfree spends most of its time foraging for nectar and pollen from flowers. In the wild they need to eat constantly. Special adaptations such as waterproofing on their wings, and tiny hairs on their legs let them gather food even in the rain. Butterfree will roam up to six miles from their nest in search of honey.

Butterfree can be found in forests and wooded areas with high amounts of moisture and mist. They can also sometimes be found flying near the ocean, which may be part of Butterfrees' migratory breeding pattern.

* Butterfree is the first Pokémon shown in the {{pkmn|anime}} to have an alternate color. However, this alternate color was [[Pink Butterfree|pink]], which is not the same as the alternate color of Butterfree in the games, in which only its wings, feet, hands, and mouth are pink.
* The Butterfree species has been trained by four anime trainers: {{Ash}}, [[Ritchie]], [[Solidad]], and [[Drew]].
* Butterfree shares the same [[species]] name with {{p|Beautifly}}. They are both known as the Butterfly Pokémon.
* Even though the 'main' part of its body is purple, it is classed as being white in the Pokédex. This is probably because the wings of Butterfree are white. However, in its Generation II and Generation IV sprites, they are shown to be a light shade of blue.

In order to conserve as much energy as possible, Metapod generally remain motionless. They can be very difficult to spot in the wild, because their green coloration helps them blend in with the tree-top canopies. If Metapod is discovered by an enemy, it is unable to do anything other than harden its outer shell. While this is enough to deter most predators, it does not offer complete protection, as the Metapod's insides still remain soft and vulnerable. Its second line of defense is to drop out of the trees using {{m|String Shot}}. Because of its vulnerability, Metapod evolve rapidly into their final evolutionary stage.

'M's appearance looks to be a box of pixels in a backwards 'L' shape that is similar to the shape of a {{wp|Tetris}} piece, identical to [[Missingno.]]'s Normal Form.

Although it seems at first glance to be like [[Missingno.]], they are actually different glitch Pokémon with many differences; for example, 'M can evolve into {{p|Kangaskhan}} while Missingno. cannot. In the party, 'M will appear as the glitched sprite of a person in the area where the player currently is.

The blocks in 'M's name depend on which sprite is occupying the spot where the player's Pokémon appears. In battle, the block on the left of its name will copy part of the sprite in the bottom-left corner of the screen (the player's Pokémon), while the block on the right will copy part of the sprite in the upper-right corner of the screen (the opponent's Pokémon). Out of battle, the blocks in its name will change depending on the player's location.

'M is notable as being one of the few non-Flying-type Pokémon to learn {{m|Sky Attack}}.

'M's appearance in-battle allows what is commonly known as the "[[Rare Candy cheat]]," the {{2v2|Red|Blue}} versions' infamous item duplication bug. It is commonly used to duplicate valuable and hard-to-obtain items, such as the [[Rare Candy]] (hence the name of the cheat). However, the duplication bug can affect any item in the game, not just Rare Candies. It even affects Key Items, making it nearly impossible to deposit them in the PC. However, this does allow players to revive a large number of {{p|Aerodactyl}} and {{p|Omanyte}}/{{p|Kabuto}}.

Encountering 'M has been known to interfere with the save game data in various ways, such as adversely affecting the [[Hall of Fame]] saved data and (if its stats are viewed) messing with some graphics until the stats of a normal Pokémon are viewed. However, neither of these do any significant damage.

Having appeared in no canon other than the games, and having no discernible [[Pokédex]] information, 'M has no known behavior.

'M, unlike most other [[Glitch Pokémon]], has been known to reside on the east coast of [[Cinnabar Island]] and the [[Seafoam Islands]], as a result of the [[Rare Candy cheat]]. Other then that, 'M has no specific habitat because it was never programmed to be in a specific area, nor was it ever programmed for the player to find it. Since it only exists in Generation I, it is confirmed that it must exist in the [[Kanto]] region. Its habitat is confirmed to exist in any location where a trainer in the Red/Blue/Yellow versions can be escaped from before being seen (see [[Mew glitch]]) -- however, since a player cannot obtain a special stat of 0, it can never be seen in those areas.

'M is notable as being one of the few non-Flying-type Pokémon to learn {{m|Sky Attack}}.

'M's appearance in-battle allows what is commonly known as the "[[Rare Candy cheat]]," the {{2v2|Red|Blue}} versions' infamous item duplication bug. It is commonly used to duplicate valuable and hard-to-obtain items, such as the [[Rare Candy]] (hence the name of the cheat). However, the duplication bug can affect any item in the game, not just Rare Candies. It even affects Key Items, making it nearly impossible to deposit them in the PC. However, this does allow players to revive a large number of {{p|Aerodactyl}} and {{p|Omanyte}}/{{p|Kabuto}}.

Encountering 'M has been known to interfere with the save game data in various ways, such as adversely affecting the [[Hall of Fame]] saved data and (if its stats are viewed) messing with some graphics until the stats of a normal Pokémon are viewed. However, neither of these do any significant damage.

Since it only exists in Generation I, it is confirmed that it must exist in the [[Kanto]] region. Its habitat is confirmed to exist in any location where a trainer in the Red/Blue/Yellow versions can be escaped from before being seen (see [[Mew glitch]]) -- however, since a player cannot obtain a special stat of 0, it can never be seen in those areas.
