* This article is, in my honest opinion, certainly the most exquisite article on all of Bulbapedia. I am glad that MissingNo. nowadays is treated as a real Pokemon, even though it only appeared in one generation. Its fame and the fact that it started the entire culture of glitching in the Pokemon games makes MissingNo. the king of the reverse side of the Pokemon franchise - the side involving delving under the skin of the games and revealing hidden secrets. MissingNo. deserves an FA; the article is very maturely written and includes many very balanced and evened-out sections with enough pictures in the right places. It shows true, honest research and gives brilliant insight into the dark world of glitches and the strange unknown of Pokemon. From my point of view MissingNo. is Bulbapedia's magnum opus article, and should win the award to let the community know that the discovery of the MissingNo. species is an amazingly fascinating milestone event in the Pokemon franchise and will be remembered for years to come. '''Butterfree''' ([[List of Japanese Pokémon names|Japanese]]: '''バタフリー''' ''Butterfree'') is a dual-type {{2t|Bug|Flying}} Pokémon.

It [[Evolution|evolves]] from {{p|Metapod}} starting at [[level]] 10. It is the final form of {{p|Caterpie}}.

==Biology==
===Physiology===
Butterfree resembles a vaguely anthropomorphic butterfly. Unlike true insects, it only has four legs, which are a pale blue color. It has a nose-like structure which is a similar color. Butterfree's body’s coloration is a darker purple-blue. It has large veined wings which are white with black markings. These markings can help distinguish male and female individuals. It has large compound eyes which tend to be a reddish color. Like members of the order {{wp|Lepidoptera}}, Butterfree’s wings are covered in fine scales. Its legs are covered in fine hairs which aid in the collection of honey.
====Gender differences====
A female has black spots on the lower parts of her wings.

===Special abilities===
The waterproof scales on Butterfree’s wings are loosely attached, and if the Butterfree flaps them hard enough, they will be released into the air. This resulting “{{m|PoisonPowder|dust}}” is toxic, and can be irritating if inhaled.

===Behavior===
Butterfree spends most of its time foraging for nectar and pollen from flowers. In the wild they need to eat constantly. Special adaptations such as waterproofing on their wings, and tiny hairs on their legs let them gather food even in the rain. Butterfree will roam up to six miles from their nest in search of honey.

===Habitat===
[[Image:Forest.gif|right|frame|{{DL|List of Pokémon by habitat|Forest Pokémon}}]]
Butterfree can be found in forests and wooded areas with high amounts of moisture and mist. They can also sometimes be found flying near the ocean, which may be part of Butterfrees' migratory breeding pattern.

===Diet===
{{main|Pokémon food}}

Butterfree collect and consume pollen and honey from flowers. Butterfree also consume sap from trees if they have been opened by {{p|Heracross}}.

==In the anime==
Xander's Butterfree shrunk back to its normal size at the end of the episode.

==Trivia==
* Butterfree is the first Pokémon shown in the {{pkmn|anime}} to have an alternate color. However, this alternate color was [[Pink Butterfree|pink]], which is not the same as the alternate color of Butterfree in the games, in which only its wings, feet, hands, and mouth are pink.
* The Butterfree species has been trained by four anime trainers: {{Ash}}, [[Ritchie]], [[Solidad]], and [[Drew]].
* Butterfree shares the same [[species]] name with {{p|Beautifly}}. They are both known as the Butterfly Pokémon.
* Even though the 'main' part of its body is purple, it is classed as being white in the Pokédex. This is probably because the wings of Butterfree are white. However, in its Generation II and Generation IV sprites, they are shown to be a light shade of blue.
* While Butterfree cannot learn {{m|Iron Defense}} itself, it can be taught it as a Metapod before [[evolution|evolving]]. It shares this trait with {{p|Beedrill}}, {{p|Dustox}}, {{p|Beautifly}}, {{p|Huntail}}, {{p|Gorebyss}}, and {{p|Salamence}}.
===Origin===
Its design appears to be based upon a common butterfly, most likely a {{wp|Large White|Cabbage White butterfly}} (more specifically, {{wp|Black-veined White|Aporia crataegi}}).
====Name origin====
Butterfree's name is a combination of ''{{wp|butterfly}}'' and ''free'', possibly referring to its ability to fly after being grounded for two evolutionary stages.
'''Metapod''' ([[List of Japanese Pokémon names|Japanese]]: '''トランセル''' ''Trancell'') is a {{type2|Bug}} Pokémon.

It [[Evolution|evolves]] from {{p|Caterpie}} starting at [[level]] 7, and it evolves into {{p|Butterfree}} starting at level 10.

==Biology==
====Physiology====
While Metapod is classified as a cocoon Pokémon, it bears more resemblance to a chrysalis. Its soft body is protected by a hard outer shell while it undergoes metamorphosis. While this shell is said to be as hard as steel, a large sudden impact could cause its vulnerable body to pop out, leaving it completely exposed. It shares many physiological and behavioral characteristics with {{p|Kakuna}}, suggesting that they may have a distant relationship.
====Gender differences====
None.
====Special abilities====
Metapod possess a very limited range of movement. However, by {{m|Harden|hardening}} their outer shell, they can protect themselves from most kinds of enemies.

===Behavior===
In order to conserve as much energy as possible, Metapod generally remain motionless. They can be very difficult to spot in the wild, because their green coloration helps them blend in with the tree-top canopies. If Metapod is discovered by an enemy, it is unable to do anything other than harden its outer shell. While this is enough to deter most predators, it does not offer complete protection, as the Metapod's insides still remain soft and vulnerable. Its second line of defense is to drop out of the trees using {{m|String Shot}}. Because of its vulnerability, Metapod evolve rapidly into their final evolutionary stage.
===Habitat===
[[Image:Forest.gif|right|frame|[[List of Pokémon by habitat#Forest Pokémon|Forest Pokémon]]]]
Metapod can often be found in wooded areas, such as [[Viridian Forest]]. They dangle themselves from leafy canopies using {{m|String Shot}}.

===Diet===
{{main|Pokémon food}}

Metapod does not eat. It relies on the energy it stored as a {{p|Caterpie}}.

==In the anime==
[[Image:EP004 017.jpg|thumb|right|{{AP|Metapod}} in the anime]]
===Major appearances===
====[[Ash's Butterfree|Ash's Metapod]]====
{{Ash}} had a Metapod that he caught as a {{p|Caterpie}} and evolved in ''[[EP003|Ash Catches a Pokémon]]''. It eventually evolved into {{p|Butterfree}} in ''[[EP004|Challenge of the Samurai]]''.

====Other====
[[Samurai]], in ''[[EP004|Challenge of the Samurai]]'', battled Ash's Metapod with his own Metapod, but because both Metapod only knew {{m|Harden}}, the battle went on for hours until a swarm of {{p|Beedrill}} forced the battle to end.

In ''[[EP144|Gettin' The Bugs Out]]'', [[Bugsy]] used a Metapod against Ash for the Gym Battle. Unlike most Metapod, this one was actually able to fight back.

In ''[[AG142|Caterpie's Big Dilemma]]'', Zander's Caterpie became [[Giant Pokémon|giant-sized]] after eating some enhanced Rare Candies. Zander's Caterpie knocked down part of a radio tower in order to make a place for it to evolve into Metapod.

===Minor appearances===
A Metapod was used by one of the students of the [[Pokémon Trainer's School]] in ''[[AG015|Gonna Rule The School!]]''.
Also, {{Special|Yellow}}'s {{p|Caterpie}} was a Metapod briefly before evolving again into {{p|Butterfree}}. [[Bugsy]] also uses two Metapod on his team.
* Metapod has the same sprite in every [[Generation III]] game, making it one of the few Kanto natives in that generation to do so.
''''M''' is a dual-type {{t|Bird}}/{{t|Normal}} [[Glitch Pokémon]].

'M is the "sister" glitch counterpart to {{P|Missingno.}}, and is found in the [[Pokémon]] {{2v2|Red|Blue}} [[Game Boy]] {{pkmn|games}}, much like its "brother", [[Missingno.]]. It is most commonly called "'M", since the apostrophe and capital letter M are the only typographical characters in its name - "▄█ <code>'M</code> ▓▒" is very difficult to produce with a computer. It is also called "'M Block" due to either the glitchy blocks next to its name or the Pokémon's boxy shape. 'M and other glitch Pokémon appear in the games due to a programming oversight.

The encounter flag for Missingno. and 'M is the highest bit of the 6th item quantity; therefore, encountering Missingno. or 'M causes the player to get 128 more of the 6th item of their bag if they have less than 128 to start (this is known as the [[Rare Candy cheat]]). Also, if the player has [[Hall of Fame]] data, encountering 'M. corrupts it. Aside from that, 'M does not have a real ability; in {{game|Red and Blue|s}} abilities did not exist yet.

==Biology==

===Physiology===
'M's appearance looks to be a box of pixels in a backwards 'L' shape that is similar to the shape of a {{wp|Tetris}} piece, identical to [[Missingno.]]'s Normal Form.

Although it seems at first glance to be like [[Missingno.]], they are actually different glitch Pokémon with many differences; for example, 'M can evolve into {{p|Kangaskhan}} while Missingno. cannot. (Its evolution is not random: 'M's identifier is 0 and Kangaskhan's is 2.)<ref>[http://www.trsrockin.com/hexlist.html R/B Hex List] ''Team Rocket Fansite'' URL Accessed July 27, 2006</ref> Missingno.'s cry differs between a shortened version of {{p|Nidoran♂}}'s cry, {{p|Ditto}}'s cry, and {{p|Dragonair}}'s cry, whereas 'M's cry is a slightly different version of {{p|Zapdos}}'s cry. If 'M is traded to the {{v|Yellow}}, it will become a [[3TrainerPoké]], but when Missingno. is traded to the Yellow version, it stays as Missingno. (although it will behave differently than the Red/Blue Missingno.).

In the party, 'M will appear as the glitched sprite of a person in the area where the player currently is.

The blocks in 'M's name depend on which sprite is occupying the spot where the player's Pokémon appears. In battle, the block on the left of its name will copy part of the sprite in the bottom-left corner of the screen (the player's Pokémon), while the block on the right will copy part of the sprite in the upper-right corner of the screen (the opponent's Pokémon). Out of battle, the blocks in its name will change depending on the player's location.
====Gender differences====
'M's only appearances were in [[Generation I]] games, where genders were not yet specified. As a result, 'M has no known gender.

===Special abilities===
'M is notable as being one of the few non-Flying-type Pokémon to learn {{m|Sky Attack}}.

'M's appearance in-battle allows what is commonly known as the "[[Rare Candy cheat]]," the {{2v2|Red|Blue}} versions' infamous item duplication bug. It is commonly used to duplicate valuable and hard-to-obtain items, such as the [[Rare Candy]] (hence the name of the cheat). However, the duplication bug can affect any item in the game, not just Rare Candies. It even affects Key Items, making it nearly impossible to deposit them in the PC. However, this does allow players to revive a large number of {{p|Aerodactyl}} and {{p|Omanyte}}/{{p|Kabuto}}.

Encountering 'M has been known to interfere with the save game data in various ways, such as adversely affecting the [[Hall of Fame]] saved data and (if its stats are viewed) messing with some graphics until the stats of a normal Pokémon are viewed. However, neither of these do any significant damage.

===Behavior===
Having appeared in no canon other than the games, and having no discernible [[Pokédex]] information, 'M has no known behavior.

===Habitat===
[[Image:GlitchHabitat.png|thumb|right|[[Glitch Pokémon]]]]
'M, unlike most other [[Glitch Pokémon]], has been known to reside on the east coast of [[Cinnabar Island]] and the [[Seafoam Islands]], as a result of the [[Rare Candy cheat]]. Other then that, 'M has no specific habitat because it was never programmed to be in a specific area, nor was it ever programmed for the player to find it. Since it only exists in Generation I, it is confirmed that it must exist in the [[Kanto]] region. Its habitat is confirmed to exist in any location where a trainer in the Red/Blue/Yellow versions can be escaped from before being seen (see [[Mew glitch]]) -- however, since a player cannot obtain a special stat of 0, it can never be seen in those areas.

==Game data==
===In Pokémon Stadium===
'M and [[Missingno.]] can be uploaded to {{eng|Pokémon Stadium}}, and (if the game doesn't freeze) will look like Substitute dolls (small {{p|Rhydon}} or {{p|Kangaskhan}}-like figures that appear when a Pokémon uses {{m|Substitute}}). 'M's graphic is blue and Missingno.'s is purple. When viewed in the Pokémon Center, all of 'M's stats will be question marks (including the Pokédex species ID number, even though the Game Boy versions identify 'M and Missingno. as #000). However, 'M will not be allowed to battle, nor will it function correctly in the Gallery (in which players can take pictures of Pokémon). Photos of it will not develop if taken.

If 'M or any other glitch Pokémon is selected in the "see list", the game will freeze, playing the music without the bass track in the background. If a player tries to view 'M's stats, the game will also freeze on occasion. <ref>[http://www.console-cheats.com/nintendo64/PokemonStadium.shtml Pokémon Stadium Cheats] ''Console Cheats'' URL Accessed July 23, 2006</ref>

===Generation II===
'M cannot be traded to {{game|Gold and Silver|s}} because it supposedly does not exist in the second generation. In the trade center, 'M appears as a {{p|Slowpoke}} or {{p|Tyrogue}}. When the players try to trade 'M, a message appears stating "Your friend's ['M's name] appears to be abnormal." and the trade is canceled automatically. Less often, 'M can be traded, in which case it turns into the Pokémon it was displayed as. <ref>[http://pages.prodigy.net/maryjorhodes/codespok.htm Code Pok] ''Prodigy.net'' URL Accessed July 23, 2006</ref>

Similar problems present themselves when attempting to transfer 'M or [[Missingno.]] to Pokémon Stadium 2. If successfully transferred, 'M and Missingno. will become a {{p|Ditto}}. <ref>[http://www.funtrivia.com/en/VideoGames/Pokemon-RedBlueYellow*-13505.html Pokémon Red, Blue and Yellow] ''Fun Trivia'' URL Accessed July 23, 2006</ref>
==Trivia==
[[Image:'MPokedex.png|thumb|175px|right|'M's [[Pokédex]] data, seen using a [[cheat|cheating device]]]]
*'M's height is 23'0<nowiki>''</nowiki>. If it were compared to all other regular Pokémon in terms of height, it would be the [[List of Pokémon by height|4th tallest Pokémon]], tied with {{p|Rayquaza}}. 'M is more than twice Missingno.'s height.
*'M's weight is 880.6 lbs. If it were compared to all other regular Pokémon in terms of weight, it would be the [[List of Pokémon by weight|10th heaviest Pokémon]]. 'M's weight is only about 25% of Missingno.'s.
*[[LM4]]'s height and weight is exactly the same as 'M's.
*'M's sprite, movepool, and stats are identical to [[Missingno.]]'s, but with two move differences: Missingno. cannot learn {{m|Pound}}, and 'M is incompatible with {{TM|50|Substitute}}.
*When the player captures an 'M, the battle will continue with no enemy sprite visable. Capturing "'M" again will result in capturing a level 0 or 80 {{p|Ditto}}; why this happens is unknown.
*'M's cry is almost exactly identical to that of {{p|Zapdos}}.
*'M is twice as large as Missingno., but not nearly as heavy.
*If a level 0 'M is captured and sent to the [[PC]] (this also applies to the subsequent {{p|Ditto}}), the game will freeze if the player tries to withdraw either one. This probably started the (fake) rumors of 'M and other [[Glitch Pokémon]] being horribly dangerous to the saved game file if captured.
*If a level 0 'M is given 0 exp from a battle with another level 0 Pokémon, it levels up to 100.

==Name origin==
'M would appear to resemble a sort of shortened version of [[Missingno.]]'s name, possibly in reference to its similarity to the well-known [[Glitch Pokémon]]. However, the most likely origin of its name is that it was pulled out of other data.
My biggest concern about this article being nominated is that some votes will inevitably be skewed by the popularity of the character. * MissingNo. was one of the most significant elements of Pokémon in the early days of Red/Blue in America. I believe that information on Ketsuban and how it was viewed in the Japanese perspective are the main missing information that would make said article perfect. Despite this however, MissingNo.'s significance far outweighs any other game element, at least to the players of Red/Blue; I highly doubt that there is anyone who played Red/Blue who knew not of MissingNo. at some point or another, though the truth about MissingNo. is still largely unknown to the general populace, and it is still looked down upon for the deeds of its fellows such as chiisai-u and 'm. For it's importance in the Rare Candy Code, it's reappearance in the Mew Glitch, and its infamous nature to Red/Blue players, MissingNo. is the ONLY Glitch Pokémon notable enough to be featured. And it IS notable, and worthy of being a Feature Article. [[User:Kumori Satosuke|Satosuke]] 13:43, 15 October 2008 (UTC)

==Biology==

===Physiology===

====Gender differences====
'M's only appearances were in [[Generation I]] games, where genders were not yet specified. As a result, 'M has no known gender.

===Special abilities===

===Behavior===
Having appeared in no canon other than the games, and having no discernible [[Pokédex]] information, 'M has no known behavior.

===Habitat===

==Game data==
===In Pokémon Stadium===

===Generation II===

Capturing "'M" again will result in capturing a Lv. 0 or 80 {{p|Ditto}}; why this happens is unknown.

==Name origin==
'M would appear to resemble a sort of shortened version of [[Missingno.]]'s name, possibly in reference to its similarity to the well-known [[Glitch Pokémon]]. However, the most likely origin of its name is that it was pulled out of other data.

Some Bulbapedia members have formed a [[Bulbapedia:Project|project]] to better organise efforts to write and improve articles about Glitch Pokémon. If you would like to help, please inquire on the [[{{NAMESPACE}} talk:{{PAGENAME}}|talk page]] or the [http://bmgf.bulbagarden.net/forumdisplay.php?f=195 Bulbapedia forum] and see [[Bulbapedia:Project GlitchDex/To-do list]].
==Project title==
===Scope and aims===
Project Glitch Pokémon covers all articles about Glitch Pokémon.
The aims of this project are to write comprehensive articles on Glitch Pokémon (and greatly improve existing articles on Glitch Pokémon), including specifics on how to obtain them, base stats, type advantages, level-up moves, TM/HM lists, and sprites. Our main sources of information will be [http://www.glitchcity.info] and [http://www.trsrockin.com].
==Structure==
Here should be the basic structure for a glitch Pokémon article (subject to change):

1 Biology

1.1 Physiology

1.1.1 Gender differences

1.2 Special abilities

1.3 Behavior

1.4 Habitat

1.5 Diet

2 Game data

2.1 Pokédex entries

2.2 Game locations

2.3 Base stats

2.4 Type effectiveness

2.5 Learnset

2.5.1 By leveling up

2.5.2 By TM/HM

2.5.3 By breeding

2.5.4 By tutoring

2.6 Evolution

3 Trivia

3.1 Name origin

4 External links

5 References
<!--
Discuss the format and content for each article covered by the project. Also discuss the various categories articles fall under.

Also please note: Glitches aren't much more than game data; therefore, they have no biology, diet, or behavior. Any such information in glitch articles is completely useless [Gawaxay]
