Mew is notable for its unique ability to learn every [[TM|Technical Machine]], [[HM|Hidden Machine]] and [[Move Tutor]] move (except those exclusive to a particular Pokémon or group of Pokémon, such as {{m|Draco Meteor}} and {{m|Secret Sword}}).

Mew is the last Pokémon in the [[List of Pokémon by Kanto Pokédex number|Kanto Pokédex]].

It is a member of the [[Mew duo]] along with {{p|Mewtwo}}.

Mew is normally described as a pink, {{DL|List of Pokémon by body style|Pokémon with a bipedal, tailed form|bipedal}} cat-like creature. Mew's hair is so fine and thin, it can only be seen under a microscope. It has a long, skinny tail ending with a rounded tip. Mew has big hind legs and short arms with three-fingered paws. Mew's feet are very large with oval markings near its three toes. Mew has triangular ears and baby blue eyes. Mew is said to have the {{wp|DNA}} of every single Pokémon contained within its body. It also vaguely resembles an embryo or fetus, and is often depicted in a pink orb.

Mew is a genderless species.

Mew's main abilities include turning invisible at will (similar to {{p|Victini}}), creating force-fields of psychic energy and being able to {{m|transform}} into any one of the other {{#expr:{{numpkmn}} - 1}} species of Pokémon.Mew also is said to possess all the genetic codes of all {{#expr:{{numpkmn}} - 1}} Pokemon species. Mew is capable of wielding every [[type]] of attack possible. It also has the ability to float in mid-air, in much the same fashion as {{p|Celebi}} and {{p|Jirachi}}. It has been seen to be able to swim underwater as well.

Mew is a very curious and intelligent Pokémon that will only appear to someone with a pure heart. It loves playing around and swimming, and is known to act very childish at times, wanting everybody it trusts to play with it. It is attracted to {{wp|lullaby|lullabies}} and will try to stay as close to the music as possible. All in all, Mew is known as a happy, playful and optimistic species of Pokémon, unlike its clone, {{p|Mewtwo}}.

Reports found in [[Cinnabar Island]]'s {{ka|Pokémon Mansion}} region speak of expeditions of scientists, either independent or [[Team Rocket]]-funded, which had sighted Mew in [[Guyana]], South America, the place where its first sighting was reported. However, since Mew can either make itself invisible or transform itself into any Pokémon it chooses, very few people have knowingly seen it, and it is called a mirage by most. Since many scientists believe that Mew is the ancestor of all Pokémon, and a number of extraterrestrial Pokémon have been discovered, it is possible that Mew could [[Extraterrestrial Pokémon|inhabit other areas of the universe]], and whether it originates from [[Pokémon world|Earth]] at all is debatable.

In this movie, Mew made a couple of cameo appearances at the start of the movie. A {{an|Mewtwo}} was cloned from Mew's DNA, extracted from Mew's eyelash. Later, Mew started appearing around [[New Island]] while Mewtwo was testing his [[starter Pokémon]] clones. Mew followed [[Team Rocket]] into the main part of the island so it could stop Mewtwo from destroying the world. After the end credits of the movie, Mew is shown flying to the mountains.

In the Japanese version, Mew's characterization was different. Mew's intention was to wipe out cloned Pokémon, Mewtwo included, because it viewed them as inferior, in stark contrast to Mewtwo, who wished to eliminate natural-born.

Mew makes a small appearance in the hour-length special ''[[Mewtwo Returns]]'', the sequel to ''[[M01|Mewtwo Strikes Back]]''. Mewtwo sees it after being thrown into the Purity Spring.

Another Mew first appeared transformed as a {{p|Ho-Oh}}, and then as a {{p|Taillow}}, landing on [[Cameran Palace]] and then {{m|transform}}ing into {{p|Treecko}}. It then transformed into an {{p|Aipom}} to play with [[Ash's Pikachu]]. {{Ash}} and {{ashfr}} released their Pokémon to play with what they thought was an Aipom.

After taking them to an attic, [[Kidd Summers]] sent her two {{p|Weavile}} after it. To escape, it {{m|teleport}}ed itself, along with Pikachu and {{MTR}}. It then transformed once again into a {{p|Pidgeot}} and flew the Pokémon to the [[Tree of Beginning]]. While Ash and the others were looking for Pikachu, Mew kept it entertained with toys.

Mew also nearly sacrificed itself to save the Tree of Beginning. {{mov|Lucario|Lucario|08}} stepped in and was able to save Mew, but ended up sacrificing itself. Mew is believed to still reside at the Tree of Beginning. It is last seen playing with a {{p|Bonsly}}.

====Other====
A {{pkmn2|mirage}} Mew appears in ''[[The Mastermind of Mirage Pokémon]]'', and helps to interfere with the plans of [[Dr. Yung|Mirage Master]].

===Minor appearances===
[[Lawrence III]]'s actions in ''[[M02|The Power of One]]'' were apparently set in motion due to an Ancient Mew card; the card itself was actually shown in the movie.

A Mew appeared in the opening of ''[[M07|Destiny Deoxys]]''.

A Mew appeared in the [[boss fantasy]] of ''[[DP092|A Lean Mean Team Rocket Machine!]]''. As of this episode, every {{cat|Generation I Pokémon}} has appeared in at least one episode of the anime.

===In the Pokémon Adventures manga===
Mew debuted in the first round of the {{chap|Red, Green & Blue}}, ''[[PS001|A Glimpse of the Glow]]''. Here, {{adv|Red}} and {{adv|Blue}} see one in [[Pallet Town]] and try to catch it, but fail. It is known as the "Phantom Pokémon" and was chased by [[Team Rocket]].

Team Rocket's chase would continue all the way to {{DL|Pokémon Adventures volume 2|the next volume}}, where they attempt to regain the disc containing Mew's habitat and information from {{adv|Green}}, but fail and are tricked into stealing an empty one she prepared. They catch up to Green and her unwilling ally Red soon afterward, and interrupt them when they tracked down and attempted to capture the rare Pokémon. However, when their {{p|Jynx}} was able to almost succeed, Mew's powerful Psychic attack left them listless, and soon escaped. The small samples of its DNA that the Rockets acquired, however, led to the creation of its powerful clone.

Another volume later, Mew is briefly seen looking into [[Indigo Plateau]] after Red wins the Pokémon League championship and decides to return to Pallet Town with his two fellow [[Pokédex Holder]]s.

It later reappeared in the {{chap|FireRed & LeafGreen}}, where it saved Red and the people of [[Vermilion City]] from the impending crash of the TR helicopter. {{adv|Mewtwo}} notices this, and realizes that he too had a root to trace itself back to, as it was born from Mew's eyelash.

===In the Pokémon Pocket Monsters manga===
A Mew appeared in ''[[PM004|Obtain the Moon Stone!!]]''. This one is actually a woman who was accidentally transformed after an experiment went wrong. She turns back later to her normal form.

{{OBP|Giovanni|Pocket Monsters}} catches Mew as part of the supplies used for the creation of {{p|Mewtwo}}. It was released along with Mewtwo after the creation was unsuccessful.

In Super Smash Bros. Mew will sometimes appear out of a [[Poké Ball]]. When summoned, it will use {{m|Fly}} to leave the arena. In single player, the summoner is awarded the "Mew Catcher" bonus, worth 10,000 points.

After unlocking every character in Melee, there is a 1 in 251 chance of Mew appearing from a Poké Ball. The thrower of the Poké Ball receives the same "Mew Catcher" bonus.

Mew returns again as a rare Pokémon in Brawl, the chance of it appearing is 1 in 493 this time. Like the other "secret" Pokémon, it drops rare items instead of just flying away. In Mew's case, the items are CDs. However, once all the pick-up CDs are obtained, it will drop Stickers instead.

Mew appears in the seventh course, [[Rainbow Cloud]]. Although the game is not combat-oriented, the difficulty of photographing Mew effectively makes it the game's boss. Mew floats in a bubble that turns opaque when the zoom is activated, so players must throw a series of Pester Balls or Food at it to break the bubble so Mew will come out for a clear shot. Photographing Mew gets an automatic bonus of 2500 points, making it the highest ranking Pokémon in the game with a highest possible score of 10,000 points with perfect positioning, size and pose.

==Biology==
===Physiology===
Mewtwo is one of the first [[artificial Pokémon|Pokémon created by science]]. The scientists who created it dreamed of creating the world's strongest Pokémon. It is widely considered unique, because only one survived the cloning process before the facility in which it was created was destroyed. However, this has yet to be fully confirmed.

Mewtwo is a creature with a {{DL|List of Pokémon by body style|Pokémon with a bipedal, tailed form|humanoid posture}}, but has a few feline features. Mewtwo's body is grayish-purple with a purple underside and a long, purple tail. Mewtwo has three circular digits on each appendage. It has an opposible toe on the inside of each foot, like many real-world primates, as well as two others that face forward. It has purple eyes (sometimes blue when attacking) and two short ears.

One of Mewtwo's most notable features is the tube extending from the back of its skull to its spine. It is most likely a secondary spinal cord, or a system of nerves, allowing for an increased amount of blood and sensory transmission to the brain, heightening its psychic powers.

Mewtwo is a genderless species.

===Special abilities===
Mewtwo is highly skilled with {{t|Psychic}} powers. It can levitate through use of telekinesis, speak telepathically, and take control of another living being's mind. It has a powerful [[signature move]], {{m|Psystrike}}, and it is also known for its powerful {{m|Shadow Ball}} and {{m|Aura Sphere}}. Mewtwo is also capable of wielding various types of attacks (but to a lesser extent than {{p|Mew}}). To exert its powerful psychic abilities, it will stay motionless for long periods of time in intense concentration to raise its capabilities to their maximum power.

In the [[Pokémon Adventures]] {{pkmn|manga}}, Mewtwo fights with a highly skilled combination of {{m|Psywave}}s and a giant spoon for long range and close range battles, respectively.

In the anime, Mewtwo also has the ability to telekinetically create a massive hurricane and is constantly protected from harm inside a reflective sphere of psychic energy. Altered in the English version, it is claimed that the hurricane was powerful enough to destroy the planet, as well as Mewtwo being able to block a Pokémon's "special abilities".

Due to its early visions of the human race, Mewtwo is known to be very aggressive and thinks of nothing but battling and defeating its foes.It was very cautious and unfriendly to humans due to the trauma it has suffered during the experimentation of Mew's genes. Its viciousness results from the repeated recombining of its DNA and the loss of its friend {{an|Amber}} (about whom it completely forgot after meeting her as a result of its creators wiping its mind). IDuring the anime special ''[[Mewtwo Returns]]'', however, Mewtwo seems to have developed a very protective and guardian-like nature to the point of surrendering to {{an|Giovanni}} just to keep its fellow clones safe.

Mewtwo, being a cloned Pokémon, has no ''natural'' habitat. However, it has been known to make its hideout in the lowest level of [[Cerulean Cave]]. Also, in the {{pkmn|anime}}, Mewtwo has been seen roaming a large city under the cover of night. It generally likes to be in dark solitude, such as the darkness of a deep cave. However, in [[Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red and Blue Rescue Team]], this artificial Pokémon is said to sleep in a [[Western Cave|cave located in the west]].

According to the [[Pokémon Mansion journals|scientific logs]] found in the {{ka|Pokémon Mansion}} of [[Cinnabar Island]], Mewtwo was born of a pregnant {{p|Mew}}, found deep in the jungles of [[Guyana]], whose embryo had been tampered with to alter its DNA. It was held and studied in the mansion where the scientists, including [[Blaine]] and [[Mr. Fuji]], performed horrific gene-splicing experiments that made it vicious and extremely powerful. It eventually broke free of the Mansion (destroying it in the process) and fled. It can be encountered in [[Cerulean Cave]], which is unable to be accessed until after a Trainer has proven his or her skill at [[Indigo Plateau]].

Mewtwo has a similar origin and personality to the Mewtwo that appeared in the anime. It is a genetically engineered Pokémon created by [[Blaine]] for [[Team Rocket]] by splicing Mew's DNA with his own. Blaine later defected from Team Rocket and hid himself away, as both he and Mewtwo were suffering from an illness caused by a shared psychic link due to their mutual DNA. Mewtwo went on a rampage and hid itself in the Cerulean Cave, but {{adv|Red}} was able to capture him with a Master Ball and return him to Blaine so he could attempt to show the mutant compassion and, if possible, find a cure for their illness. Blaine and Mewtwo fought against [[Lance]] two years later, but were defeated when their condition weakened them and Blaine collapsed. The pair were later cured by the flames of {{p|Entei}} whom Blaine had earlier befriended and partnered with. Later, Blaine left Mewtwo on his own, and the legendary Pokémon only returned in the {{chap|FireRed & LeafGreen}} when he learned of Giovanni's plans to use {{adv|Deoxys}} for nefarious purposes. Finally starting to speak through its mind, Mewtwo joined up with Red to attempt to defeat Deoxys and Giovanni, and with Red's help managed to defeat the duo after a tough fight that nearly killed him. It has a Quiet [[nature]].

Ho-Oh is a phoenix-like bird with gold and red being its dominant colors. It also loosely resembles a peacock. Ho-Oh has yellow tail-feathers, a white underside, and green feathers at the tip of its wings. Ho-Oh has a green stripe on its neck, a yellow beak, black rings around its red-iris eyes, and a feathered-crest. Ho-Oh's wings are prismatic, causing it to trail a rainbow behind it.

Ho-Oh is a genderless species.

===Special abilities===
Ho-Oh's most notable ability is its mythical power to resurrect the dead. Ho-Oh is the [[Signature move|only known Pokémon]] that learns {{m|Sacred Fire}} and can hold [[Sacred Ash]]. It is said that when it flies its huge wings create bright, colorful rainbows.

===Behavior===
Not much is known about this creature, due to the fact that few Trainers have been lucky enough to see it. It has been observed to be territorial at times when its nest is disturbed. It freely flies the world's skies in search of a Trainer with a pure heart.
This pokemon still watches the world due to the reaction of one of it's creations when one of thethe crystal bells was shattered.

According to the {{pkmn|anime}}, Ho-Oh lived in the [[Bell Tower|Tin Tower]] in ancient times. When a war broke out, burning both the Tin Tower and the Brass Tower down, it created {{p|Raikou}}, {{p|Entei}}, and {{p|Suicune}}, and all four disappeared. Later, a new Tin Tower was erected, but Ho-Oh since then has never come back for sure. A sacred flame from Ho-Oh burns in the [[Dragon's Den]]; it was obtained during the same war.

Ho-Oh was seen flying into the sunset at the end of ''[[AG178|Battling the Enemy Within!]]''. This time, {{an|Brock}}, {{an|May}}, [[Max]], [[Scott]] and {{FB|Pyramid King|Brandon}} saw Ho-Oh as well (on a slightly related note, this time, {{an|May|someone}} other than Ash managed to identify it first).

Prior to the events of the GSC saga, Pryce had lost his control over Ho-Oh, and thus attacked the [[Bell Tower|Tin Tower]] using [[Team Rocket]] to prompt Ho-Oh to return to [[Ecruteak City]]. Ho-Oh was later seen at [[Indigo Plateau]] under Pryce's control, alongside {{p|Lugia}}, wreaking havoc and destruction. It was then lent to [[Karen]] and [[Will]] to fight Green with alongside {{p|Lugia}}, and nearly defeated her [[legendary birds]], but both of them were eventually brought back to their senses and freed.

Ho-Oh is based on the {{wp|Huma bird}}, a legendary bird that is said to never rest, living its entire life flying continuously, and resurrects itself and others in its own ashes and flames. Ho-Oh, like {{p|Moltres}}, is also based on the legend of the {{wp|Phoenix (mythology)|phoenix}}; unlike Moltres, it is based more on the {{wp|Fenghuang}}, the immortal phoenix of China from which it derives its name. Many cultures view the Phoenix and Huma as symbols of resurrection; this is seen in Ho-Oh, which was reborn rising from [[Sacred Ash|its own ashes]] and had a hand in resurrecting {{p|Suicune}}, {{p|Raikou}} and {{p|Entei}}.
