The three starting coins are a yellow {{p|Shaymin}} coin, a blue coin with the different Energy symbols, and a red {{p|Arceus}} coin. The opponent uses the red Arceus coin. Additional coins are made available when a player registers a purchased deck.

===Unavailable features===
The following are features still unavailable, with the game in its open-beta stage:
* Leaderboards
* Gameplay & Avatar Items
* Account History

==Currency==
There are four main currencies in PTCGO. These are Tokens, Gems, Booster Credits, and Tournament Keys. Only Tokens and Booster Credits are currently obtainable.

===Tokens===
Trainer Tokens are obtained in various parts of the game, such as Trainer Challenges and Tutorials. They are tied to the accounts, so they may be used on [[Pokémon.com]].

===Gems===
Gems are currently unobtainable. They will be used to provide an alternative way to acquire booster packs in game in a future update.

===Booster Credits===
Booster Credits are used to purchase booster packs in game. They can be obtained from redeeming codes on code cards, available in {{TCG|Black & White}} booster packs and onward. Codes that come from the {{TCG|Plasma Storm}} expansion, can be redeemed for TCGO Plasma Storm booster packs. You can not purchase packs from sets before {{TCG|Plasma Storm}} with codes received from Plasma Storm booster packs.

===Tournament Keys===
Tournament Keys are currently unobtainable. Their future use is unknown, but presumably they will be needed to enter tournaments.

==Pokémon decks==
{{main|List of Pokémon Trading Card Game Online decks}}
Nine decks have so far been made available to players, with two decks each under the types {{TCG|Grass}}, {{TCG|Fire}}, and {{TCG|Water}}. Three, {{TCG|Basic Red}}, {{TCG|Basic Blue}}, and {{TCG|Basic Green}}, are available to use anytime. The other six, {{TCG|Red Frenzy}}, {{TCG|Green Tornado}}, {{TCG|Blue Assault}}, {{TCG|Night Hunter}}, {{TCG|Toxic Tricks}}, and {{TCG|Power Play}} are only available if players redeem codes from actual decks they have bought from stores. The first three decks have twelve cards that can be unlocked as players play through Trainer Challenge. These cards automatically replace certain cards in the deck the player used whilst in the Trainer Challenge, though they are still available in the Deck Builder. As actual decks are released, their online counterpart are also made available.

In all, over 2971 cards, including card variants, are listed on the website. The expansions currently supported cover {{TCG|HeartGold & SoulSilver}} through {{TCG|Plasma Storm}}.

==Trivia==
*When using the redemption code 'dragonsexalted', the player receives a male and female version of a Pokémon EX Hat, despite avatar items not yet being available.
**The same goes for the codes 'nextdestinies' and 'darkexplorers'.
**Redeeming 'plasmastorm' gives the player a Power Relay deck.{{Side series}}<br>
===Goals===
# Create concise articles on all aspects of the Pokémon Trading Card Game.
# Working to ensure all articles covering individual cards match the current standard (see to-do list).

===To-do list===
*Improve the quality of the main [[Pokémon Trading Card Game]] article.
*Update all Pokémon card articles that currently use the {{Template|Graytable}} template for Pokédex entries and replace it with the {{Template|Carddex}} template.
*Add Japanese text and/or translations to Pokédex entries, attacks, or abilities that still require them.
*Add good quality images for cards that still require them and where possible, replace Japanese card images with English ones.

===Structure===
====Main card articles====
The standard structure for each Pokémon card article is listed below; good example articles are {{TCG ID|Base Set|Charizard|4}} and {{TCG|Dark Metal Energy}}.

The article should start off with the relative Infobox template. For example, a Pokémon card would use the PokémoncardInfobox template. The name of the card should follow, then a brief summary of the card that may include type, stage, class, or the set it was released in. Afterwards, all cards should follow the format as detailed below.<br>
'''<nowiki>==Card text==</nowiki>'''<br>
Any Pokémon Powers, Poké-Bodies, Poké-Powers, Abilities, Attacks or effects as detailed on the card are put under this heading.<br>
:'''<nowiki>===Pokédex data===</nowiki>'''
:Attacks, Pokédex entries, characters, or items that originate from, or are derived from the [[Pokémon games]] are detailed here.
====Cards by Pokémon articles====
These pages are designed to serve as definitive references for all variations of each Pokémon species that has been featured on a card. Each page should start with how many card iterations of that Pokémon there has been (using the expression <nowiki>{{#expr: {{PAGESINCATEGORY:{{{Card Name}}}}} - 1}}</nowiki>), followed by the expansion it debuted in and any special sets it has been the main focus of. A good example article is {{TCG|Pikachu}}, as it covers all eras of the TCG. Ensure that the article also references the relevant Pokédex number in the category link at the bottom of the page.
====Card images====
Ideally, any images should be of a high enough quality so that the main artwork can be clearly seen and all text can be discerned. The preferred format for card images is .jpg. All card images from expansion sets or half decks should conform to the standard naming convention, which constitutes of Pokémon name (as it is on the card), the set name, and the set number with no spaces. For example, the Charizard card from Base Set is named '''CharizardBaseSet4.jpg'''. Ensure that no watermarks or other obtrusive marks are present and if possbile, the card is not skewed.

===Key templates===
When entering information into any of the infoboxes, ensure that you preview before saving the page, as minor mistakes in spelling may make portions of them not work. Instructions on how each of the infoboxes work can be found on their respective discussion pages. As the TCG is a constantly evolving game, new parameters may be added to accomodate new game mechanics. Refer to these pages, or inspect the templates themselves to see new changes.
====Link templates====
These link templates are particularly useful for making lists of the cards available in the different sets or theme decks.
* {{Template|TCG}} - This link template is for cards which appear widely in the game, such as energy cards. To use this link template, type in <nowiki>{{TCG|Card Name}}</nowiki>. For example, <nowiki>{{TCG|Dark Metal Energy}}</nowiki> would result in {{TCG|Dark Metal Energy}}.
* {{Template|TCG ID}} - This link template is for cards which appear in only certain sets, such as Pokémon cards and trainer cards. To use this link template, type in <nowiki>{{TCG ID|Set Name|Card Name|Number}}</nowiki>. For example, <nowiki>{{TCG ID|Base Set|Charizard|4}}</nowiki> would result in {{TCG ID|Base Set|Charizard|4}}.
* {{Template|ct}} - This link template is to link to the TCG types, much like the {{template|type}} template links to types from the handheld games.

Pokeacciobroom: /* Expansions that are part of the current rotation */

A '''rotation''' in the [[Pokémon Trading Card Game]] is when several sets are removed from [[Play! Pokémon]] sanctioned events, generally because they are too old and would not be compatible with newer sets or rules. Rotations almost always occur directly following the [[World Championships]] and remove four or more sets. If a set is rotated, that means a player may no longer use any card from that set in their deck (with exceptions; see below). This rule only applies to {{TCG|Modified format}}. In {{TCG|Unlimited format}}, players may use any card from any set in their decks.

==Legal cards from rotated sets==
Some cards in sets that are part of the current rotation are reprints of cards that appeared in older rotations. If a card is included as part of any set in the current rotation, any version of that card is legal for tournament play. For example, at least one version of {{TCG ID|EX Sandstorm|Rare Candy|88}} has been legal in every modified format since it was printed. Thus, older versions of Rare Candy, even those from rotated sets like {{TCG|EX Sandstorm}} and {{TCG|Great Encounters}}, are still legal cards. Similarly, basic {{TCG|Energy card}}s from all sets are still allowed in tournament play.

In cases where a card is reprinted with significant text changes, the player playing the card must have a new copy of the card on hand, separate from their deck to serve as reference. For example, the effect of {{TCG ID|Base Set|Energy Retrieval|81}} printed in {{TCG|Black & White}} is different from the original print in {{TCG|Base Set}}. A player would be permitted to include the Base Set print of Energy Retrieval in their deck for tournament play, but would be required to provide a copy of the Black & White print as reference.
