Oshawott originally belonged to [[Professor Juniper]], as one of the three [[starter Pokémon]] a new [[Pokémon Trainer]] could choose. Ash called him cute when he was sent out in ''[[BW001|In The Shadow of Zekrom!]]'', when [[Trip]] had to decide between the three starters. He then became extremely shocked when Trip chose {{p|Snivy}}. Soon after, he started taking interest in Ash, observing him but staying out of sight, and to the point that he left Professor Juniper's lab to follow him.

Eventually, Oshawott expressed interest in traveling with Ash and convinced Ash to take him along on his journey in ''[[BW003|A Sandile Gusher of Change!]]''. Ash only realized that it was Professor Juniper's Oshawott when he failed to capture it in a new [[Poké Ball]], and had to obtain a worried Professor Juniper's approval to allow Oshawott to travel with him and to request for Oshawott's Poké Ball.

Oshawott has a sea-shell shaped appendage on its belly called a "scalchop" that can be detached and used in and out of battle, first seen in ''[[BW002|Enter Iris and Axew!]]'' when he popped [[Team Rocket]]'s balloon, thereby saving Pikachu and [[Iris's Axew]] from captivity. Oshawott's scalchop is made of keratin, and being light but strong, it is capable of deflecting attacks, prominently shown when he deflected {{TP|Cilan|Pansage}}'s {{m|Bullet Seed}} and ultimately {{m|SolarBeam}} in ''[[BW006|Dreams by the Yard Full!]]''. During that decisive match for the {{badge|Trio}}, he subsequently used its scalchop in a {{m|Razor Shell}} attack to defeat {{an|Cilan}}'s Pansage, earning Ash a victory.

Oshawott was revealed to be male when it battled a wild female {{AP|Snivy}} that would be caught by Ash in ''[[BW007|Snivy Plays Hard to Catch!]]''. He became infatuated when hit by Snivy's {{m|Attract}}, and was eventually recalled.

In ''[[BW010|A Rival Battle for Club Champ!]]'', he was used to fight against [[Trip]]'s {{p|Tranquill}}. He was defeated by two consecutive hits of {{m|Aerial Ace}}, due to Tranquill's {{a|Super Luck}} ability.

In [[BW015]], he battled [[Lenora]] and her {{p|Watchog}} after her {{p|Lillipup}}'s {{m|Roar}} pulled him onto the battlefield, to his surprise. Despite fighting well and making use of his scalchop as a shield again, he was defeated by a powerful {{m|Thunderbolt}} after Watchog separated him from his scalchop. In [[BW016]], Oshawott and {{AP|Tepig}} trained with Ash in the [[Battle Club]] to increase their speed. During the training, he learned {{m|Aqua Jet}}, but had trouble with hitting the target. He battled Watchog again in Ash's rematch with Lenora after being pulled into battle again by Roar. He still showed some difficulty in controlling Aqua Jet, but he managed to hit Watchog on his third try. Unfortunately, he also knocked himself out in the process, leaving Tepig to battle Lenora's {{p|Herdier}} alone.

In [[BW027]], Oshawott develops a crush on a wild {{TP|Iris|Emolga}}. When she uses {{m|Attract}} on [[Bianca's Minccino]], Oshawott voluntarily jumps in the attack's path so he could get hit with it instead. Later on, he decides to go up against a group of {{p|Swoobat}} to protect Emolga. On both occasions, Ash is forced to recall Oshawott to his Poké Ball. Later in [[BW028]] he valiantly protected Emolga and Axew from some wild Watchog and retrived them an apple each, however, Emolga let a wild {{p|Simisear}} knock him out.

==Personality==
Oshawott, like some of Ash's previous Pokémon, had constantly sought attention from Ash. In ''[[BW003|A Sandile Gusher of Change!]]'' when he wanted to travel with Ash, he jealously knocked Pikachu off Ash's shoulders and pretended that he was as close as Ash was to Pikachu. Then, when Ash was at the Pokémon [[Battle Club]] in ''[[BW004|The Battle Club and Tepig's Choice!]]'' battling another Trainer, he came out of its [[Poké Ball]], even though Ash had already clearly chosen Pikachu. However, he promptly changed his mind to battle when he realized that his opponent was {{p|Dewott}}, a Pokémon of his own evolved form. He also bears a few similarities to [[Dawn's Piplup]] in acting proud and a little boasting, but sometimes not being able to back it up, and acting a little dramatic when things go wrong, or he doesn't get his way.

As {{Ash}} leaves the forest from the previous episodes, he is amazed to see a large city in front of him. Thinking of it as [[Striaton City]], he is pumped for the Pokémon Gym. However, {{an|Iris}} says that Striaton City is in fact the next town.

Ash is feeling down but Iris tells him not to despair as there is a "Pokémon Battle Club", this piques Ash's curiosity.

Ash and Iris appear in front of a large green building, and they both enter. Iris explains how the battle club works on a computer inside. Four panels appear on the screen and Iris chooses the top left one with a picture of two trainers. She goes on and says this is the trainer's profile as pictures of Pokémon with their trainers appear. As Iris goes on Ash and {{AP|Pikachu}} get more excited by the minute.

Ash and Iris enter a room with a Pokémon battle already started between two trainers. One trainer has a {{p|Futachimaru}} and the other {{p|Janovy}}. Ash looks them up on his Pokédex. The trainer with Janovy tells it to use {{m|Leaf Blade}}, but Futachimaru blasts it back with a blast of water. Janovy falls near Ash and Iris and a rather large announcer declares Janovy's defeat. Janovy's trainer runs up and asks it if it is alright. The trainer then runs out carrying the injured Pokémon. The announcer introduces himself as the battle manager and Ash and Iris introduce themselves. The announcer notices his Pikachu as it is not native to Unova. The winning trainer asks Ash if his Pikachu is strong, then challenges Ash to a battle, which he accepts.

As Ash gets ready to battle with Pikachu, {{AP|Oshawott}} stumbles out of its Poké Ball, wanting to battle. Despite Ash and Pikachu's reasoning, it pushes Pikachu to the ground and gets ready to battle. The other trainer sends out Futachimaru, and upon seeing its evolution Oshawott has its doubts and urges Pikachu to battle for it. Ash returns Oshawott to its Poké Ball, and Pikachu and Ash get their game face on for a brawl.

Ash tells Pikachu to start off with {{m|Thunderbolt}}, which Futachimaru evades. Iris comments on the Pokémon's speed. Ash then tells Pikachu to use {{m|Iron Tail}}, this time landing a clear shot. Futachimaru falls back near its trainer it then tries to get up. Seeing this as a chance, Ash tells Pikachu to use {{m|Volt Tackle}}, however Futachimaru evades at the last moment. The trainer smiles and instructs Futachimaru to use {{m|Razor Shell}}, landing a clear hit.

Meanwhile, Team Rocket try and break into a nearby building, inside of which a silhouette of Pokémon can be seen. The Pokémon dashes out, casing Team Rocket to make noise, setting off the alarm. Meanwhile, Ash's battle is put to a halt by the alarm. The announcer goes out and checks with his subordinates. Ash, Pikachu, and Iris dash out, curious on what happened. Over at the building, they inspect but find nothing. They decide to check the security cameras. They are all then gathered in a room where a monitor shows the building's rooms in a 3D view. The video shows Team Rocket leaving the building in a hurry, followed by a dark black Pokémon. Ash uses his Pokédex to manually bring up the entry on the Pokémon {{p|Umbreon}}. Ash and Iris decide to help the manager find it. Ash leaves Oshawott and Pikachu to guard the [[Pokémon food]] he left. Instead, Oshawott eats all the food, and knocks Pikachu backwards into some boxes when the Mouse Pokémon tries to stop him. Many falling boxes hit Pikachu on the head, followed by a metal container, knocking him out. Ash then sees a {{p|Tepig}} try to eat the food, but fails because it has a rope tied around its mouth. Ash attempts to help it, but Iris appears and scares it away. Ash manages to corner it and take the rope off of it. After feeding and cleaning Tepig, Ash and Iris take it back to the manager, who explains that Tepig belonged to an arrogant trainer, who, after Tepig's defeat to a {{p|Deerling}}, abandoned it. In a sad attempt to follow its trainer, Tepig got the rope tied over its mouth. Just then, Team Rocket attacks, and tries to steal Pikachu. Ash attempts to use Oshawott to free Pikachu, but is unable to. Then, Tepig decides to fight beside Ash. Ash orders an {{m|Ember}} attack, freeing Pikachu. However, Team Rocket manages to escape. Iris then decides to catch Tepig. However, Tepig decides to go with Ash instead.
