Mudkip and members of its evolution family dwell in swamps or other wetlands, deep inside isolated islands, because of their dislike of fresh water lakes and ponds. Soon after birth on beautiful beaches, they swim to swamps deep within islands. Very few have been known to hatch in swamps.

Mudkip first appeared in [[AG001|Get the Show on the Road]], when [[May]] was asked to use a Pokemon to attack some Poocheneas. Then when May was asked to pick her [[starter Pokémon]], she didn't pick Mudkip after Mudkip refused to do what May asked.

[[Brock]] has a {{TP|Brock|Marshtomp}} that he caught as a Mudkip in ''[[AG025|A Mudkip Mission]]''. Since then, it has gotten significantly less screentime (and battle experience) than its [[Hoenn]] starter counterparts, [[Ash's Sceptile]] and [[May's Blaziken]]. It was the last of the three starters to evolve (in ''[[AG148|A Chip Off the Old Brock]]'') and it never reached its final evolutionary stage like the others did.

[[Nicholai|Nicholai's]] starter Pokémon was a Mudkip. Sometime afterwards, his Mudkip evolved into a Marshtomp.

During ''[[AG034|Having a Wailord of a Time]]'', [[Nurse Joy]] asks [[Ash Ketchum|Ash]] and [[Max]] to look over a {{p|Treecko}}, {{p|Torchic}}, and Mudkip while {{an|May}} was practicing for the upcoming Pokémon Contest. The Mudkip of this group was very young and cried easily.

In Pokémon Special, When {{Special|Ruby}} was attacked by {{Special|Sapphire}}'s {{p|Torchic}}, [[Professor Birch]] told him to look in his briefcase, to pick up the Poké Ball with a blue Pokémon and to throw it. The Poké Ball released a Mudkip and he nicknamed it Zuzu. At the beginning Ruby was dissaponted with it because it wasn't pretty enough like his other Pokémon and it couldn't particpate in any [[Pokémon Contest]]. He tried with different conditions and then he decided that [[Tough]] Contests wolud be perfect for it. Zuzu eventually evolved into a {{p|Marshtomp}} and the into a {{p|Swampert}}.

This episode begins the journey of {{an|Dawn}}, a ten-year-old girl living in [[Twinleaf Town]] in [[Sinnoh]]. On this day, she travels to [[Professor Rowan]]'s laboratory and obtains her [[starter Pokémon|first Pokémon]], a {{TP|Dawn|Piplup}}.

== Synopsis ==
The episode begins early in the morning, with the sun shining brightly into the bedroom of a young girl who is just waking up on the dawn of one of the most important days of her life: the start of her adventures with [[Pokémon]]. She stays still, then gets up and pushes the window open. Today she will get her [[Starter Pokémon|first Pokémon]].

Sometime later, the girl, named {{an|Dawn}}, is already half-way dressed when [[Johanna|her mother]] appears. Dawn lets her in along with a {{TP|Johanna|Glameow}}. The two greet each other while Glameow rests on the bed Downstairs, mother and daughter discuss Dawn's plans and Dawn pulls out a postcard that she received from [[Professor Rowan]] inviting her to his laboratory to pick up her first Pokémon. The postcard also contains a map to his lab, and pictures of the three Pokémon that she will be able to choose from. Dawn's mother wonders what Pokémon her daughter will choose and Dawn looks over at the pictures of the three Pokémon: {{p|Turtwig}} the {{type2|Grass}}, {{p|Chimchar}} the {{type2|Fire}}, and {{p|Piplup}} the {{type2|Water}}. Dawn then comments that regardless, all three Pokémon would make a great partner in her bid to become a top {{pkmn|Coordinator}} just like her mother. Dawn fantasizes about performing in {{pkmn|Contests}} with the three different Pokémon.

Later, Dawn prepares to leave for her journey, lugging a suitcase behind her. Her mother tells her to pack more sensibly and fits everything Dawn needs in a small backpack. Dawn then sets out towards [[Sandgem Town]] from her home in [[Twinleaf Town]] along {{rt|201}}. She arrives in a town, and runs into a building she believes to be the Professor's lab, only to find that it is a restaurant. She then proceeds to follow every possible direction, getting herself lost. While reading her map, she bumps into a man who reveals himself to be Professor Rowan, who guides her to his laboratory.

Meanwhile, at the lab, Professor Rowan's assistants are chatting while examining and feeding the the three starter Pokémon. However, a fight quickly brews when Chimchar steals the last of Piplup's food. Piplup begins attacking Chimchar with bubbles while Chimchar runs around the lab. While trying to keep Piplup under control, one of the assistants points it towards a {{p|Starly}} and {{p|Staraptor}}, who begin flying around and wrecking books and papers. The two then {{m|fly}} through an open window, followed by Chimchar (with Piplup in hot pursuit). The scientists plan to clean up, but as they begin, Professor Rowan arrives with Dawn.

With only the Turtwig remaining, Dawn asks and is allowed to go and search for the four missing Pokémon. After receiving some tips from Rowan, Dawn runs off towards the forest where the Pokémon were headed. Before she reaches the forest, however, she runs into Chimchar and Piplup, Chimchar still swinging away from Piplup's {{m2|BubbleBeam|bubbles}}. Dawn attempts to calm them down, but they ignore her, Piplup changing its target to her briefly before both disappear into the forest. Dawn runs into the forest after them, only to find Piplup as well as several other Pokémon trapped in a web created by an {{p|Ariados}}. Dawn quickly hatches a plan, causing the Ariados to destroy its own web, landing Piplup safely in her arms. However, after sliding down a hill, Piplup seems very indignant, using Peck on Dawn several times. Dawn begins to berate it, but then realizes that it is simply hungry. However, although Dawn offers it Pokémon food, it seems disdainful and won't eat it. This scene it interrupted when Ariados returns, attacking Dawn and Piplup with several of its friends.

Trapped in a cage created by {{m|String Shot}}, Dawn distracts the Ariados with food while Piplup destroys the cage with {{m|BubbleBeam}}. Unfortunately, before Dawn can escape with Piplup, an Ariados trips her with String Shot. However, Piplup uses {{m|Bide}} to absorb the attacks of the Ariados, then destroys them and the cage with a massive energy wave. Shortly after, the Piplup faints, exhausted from having taken all the attacks.

While walking through the forest, Dawn stumbles upon [[Lake Verity]]. While there, she spots Staraptor carrying Chimchar back to the lab, with Starly close behind. Before they can return to the lab, however, the lake ripples, and a mysterious figure appears for a moment before vanishing. When Dawn asks Professor Rowan about it, he notes that it could be the [[legendary Pokémon]] of the lake. Shortly after, Dawn is presented with several [[Poké Ball]]s and a [[Pokédex]]. When asked which Pokémon she wants for a starter, Dawn immediately chooses {{TP|Dawn|Piplup}}, noting that she and it are already a team. Dawn then sets out for her Pokémon journey in earnest, riding away from the lab.

At the same time, {{Ash}}, {{AP|Pikachu}}, and {{AP|Aipom}} are on a ship bound for [[Sinnoh]]. Ash boasts about becoming the Sinnoh [[Champion]] while [[Jessie]], [[James]], and {{MTR}} watch from below decks. Later, Ash discusses Aipom accompanying Ash to Sinnoh with [[Professor Oak]], who notes that he will send Aipom's Poké Ball to Professor Rowan. Before they continue, though, [[Team Rocket]] quickly snatches Pikachu from their balloon. However, before they can leave, Meowth begins to argue with Jessie, attacking {{TP|Jessie|Wobbuffet}} with {{m|Fury Swipes}}. Wobbuffet then uses {{m|Counter}}, destroying the balloon and sending Pikachu falling into the forest. The episode ends with Ash and Aipom running after Team Rocket, while Dawn cycles away from the lab.

== Synopsis ==
Dawn and her new Piplup are relaxing in a field after their tiresome morning. A wild Buneary pops out of the grass. Dawn scans it with her Pokédex and is eager to capture it. Piplup attacks it with a {{m|BubbleBeam}}, but Buneary strikes back with a {{m|Tackle}}. Piplup is knocked out and Buneary bounces off Dawn's head and hops away.

Traveling through the forest on her bike with Piplup in the basket, Dawn consoles it - they'll have better luck next time. Dawn then spots a Burmy hanging from a tree above and decides next time is now! Piplup attacks with another BubbleBeam but the Burmy drops from the tree, scaring it senseless. Dawn comforts Piplup and grabs a [[Poké Ball]]. She is about to throw it but realizes Burmy has gone. Dawn reassures Piplup that they will just have to try again later.

But Dawn and Piplup are stunned when a tired and injured Pikachu (Ash's), stumbles out of a hedge and collapses. Dawn scans it and sends Piplup into battle. Unfortunately Piplup attacks her. She tosses a Poké Ball at Pikachu, but is stunned when Pikachu isn't pulled into the ball. Before she can question why, a Cacnea, Seviper and Dustox lunge out of the bush, followed by a Meowth. Dawn is stunned to hear it talk - her Pokédex doesn't say it can. Jessie and James, with Wobbuffet and Mime Jr., also appear, thrilled to have finally caught Pikachu. Pikachu however, launches a {{m|Thunderbolt}}, barbecuing Team Rocket and Dawn's bike. Seviper, Cacnea, and Dustox advance on Pikachu. Dawn, warning Team Rocket to leave it alone, asks who they are. Team Rocket say their motto, and realize that they are in Sinnoh, James' old home. Pikachu cowers behind Dawn and she tells Piplup to attack. Seviper wraps itself around Piplup, squeezing it tight. Piplup attacks it with BubbleBeam, releasing its grip. Team Rocket won't give up and their Pokémon attack. Pikachu fires a Thunderbolt and Team Rocket are sent blasting off. It then collapses into Dawn's arms.

Dawn takes Pikachu to the Pokémon Center, where Nurse Joy tells her it will be fine. She makes a video-phone call home to her mom, who watches in dismay as Dawn and Piplup argue and fight about who saved Pikachu. She then calls Professor Rowan to tell him her story.

Meanwhile in the forest, Ash has had Aipom in the trees looking for Pikachu, but there's no luck. Dejectedly, they both sit down when Officer Jenny rides past on her motorbike. She offers to give them a lift to Twinleaf Town, which Ash accepts.

At the lab, Ash tells the Professor that he has lost his Pikachu and the Professor realizes it must be the same one Dawn found. He and Ash call the Pokémon Center, where Ash is happy to learn his Pikachu is okay. He and Aipom set off right away.

Walking through the forest, Team Rocket ponder whether to contact the boss. Noticing a grand mansion of James' family's, they dash inside to look around. They stumble upon James' old playroom, where a single small chest sits. James' eyes light up as he realizes what is inside (Jessie of course hopes for riches), but it is his old bottlecaps, and a Poké Ball. James explains that it holds an old friend. The ball opens, revealing a Carnivine that chomps down on his head in affection.

Dawn is back on the road with Piplup and Pikachu, and Ash is still making his way to the Pokémon Center. A large truck pulls up alongside him and stops. The passenger seat opens and someone jumps out. It's Brock! The girl driving the truck asks Brock if this is the guy he was looking for and Brock whispers to Ash that he might have a chance with her. A phone call from her 'male friend' drops Brock's fantasies down a peg or two. She drives off and Ash explains the situation about Pikachu.

Aipom swings through the trees, accidentally smashing into a Starly. Ash scans it with his 'Dex. Ash is eager to capture it and pulls out a Poké Ball, but before he can throw it, Starly whips up a {{m|Gust}}. It then slams into Aipom with a {{m|Quick Attack}}, but Aipom fights back, knocking it back with {{m|Focus Punch}}. Ash throws the Poké Ball and Starly is captured! Ash looks at the ball, realizing that it's no fun without Pikachu. He lets Starly out, telling it to find Pikachu. Starly flies off into the distance as Ash and Brock follow it. Will Ash see Pikachu again?

When he was younger, Meowth lived on the streets in {{wp|Hollywood}} after he came there in search of fame and fortune. He was a member of a gang of street Meowth that was led by a {{p|Persian}}; this gang annoyed the humans in town, stealing food and causing trouble in general. One day, Meowth came across a female Meowth named [[Meowzie]]. Since she rejected him and preferred the company of her rich human mistress, Meowth attempted to make himself stand out from other Meowth and become more human-like to make himself "worthy" of her. Thus, he painstakingly taught himself to speak human language and walk upright like a human. When he approached her after this transformation, she once again rejected him, calling him a freak. Heartbroken, Meowth remembered the first human word he learned to speak - "rocket" - and was inspired to join Team Rocket. In Japanese, he often puts the word "''Nya''" into his sentences, the equivalent of a meow in Japanese. This was abandoned in the English dub shortly into the beginning of the series.

In ''[[EP070|Go West, Young Meowth]]'', Meowth, Jessie, and James returned to Hollywood while following {{Ash}}, and Meowth was reunited with Meowzie, who had since been abandoned by her mistress and was forced to join the gang of street Meowth. Meowth fought his former Persian leader to win Meowzie's love, and won, but Meowzie demonstrated that her loyalty was with Persian since he took care of her when she needed it, and Meowth was once again heartbroken.

Because of the effort Meowth exerted while learning to speak and walk like a human, he has not learned the signature move of his species, {{m|Pay Day}}. In ''[[EP096|Meowth Rules]]'', Meowth was worshiped by an island of people who believed that he could bring them riches with Pay Day. When he was caught in a battle meant to induce Pay Day, Jessie and James had to secretly bail him out by throwing the last of their spare change and some of James's prized bottlecaps in order to appease the islanders.

There has been some debate as to whether or not Meowth was ever [[Giovanni]]'s "Top Cat" (personal pet). He has stated himself as such in front of Giovanni with no objection (only to say that {{TP|Giovanni|Persian}} was now in that position). Yet in ''[[H012|Training Daze]]'', he was shown to have been present at Team Rocket Headquarters for a short time, during which we see that Persian is already there. During this time, Meowth became a servant to Giovanni, bringing him food and drinks; however, he was unsuccessful at this task and was assigned to the team of Jessie and James. In light of this, it should be noted that ''[[H012|Training Daze]]'' potentially contradicted other stated facts from previous episodes regarding Team Rocket's back story.

Meowth has an ambitious, conniving, and idealistic personality. He has made it his life goal to please Giovanni (or "Boss," as he and his teammates call Giovanni), and will stop at nothing to capture or steal useful or rare [[Pokémon]], especially [[Ash's Pikachu]], which he has been pursuing since he encountered it in ''[[EP002|Pokémon Emergency]]''. Several times, Meowth and Pikachu have had to team up, such as in the episodes ''[[EP104|Bound for Trouble]]'' and ''[[EP274|Hoenn Alone]]'' when both were separated from their respective parties. His relationship with Jessie and James varies in quality; for example, in ''[[EP070|Go West, Young Meowth]]'' they stated that they regarded Meowth as a friend, but in ''[[EP104|Bound for Trouble]]'', having discovered Meowth and Pikachu after the two had been stuck together, they both stated that they had really been looking for Pikachu and Meowth was just 'part of the package'. Meowth seems to have aspects of each of his teammates in him; in arguments, he can often be seen siding with either Jessie (usually denouncing James's incompetence) or James (usually complaining about Jessie's overdramatic and rash behavior). Despite these fights, the three remain very close and loyal friends.

Despite his seemingly outgoing nature, Meowth also has a contemplative inner side not seen as often. In one of his image songs, ''[[Meowth's Song]]'', and in ''[[Mewtwo Strikes Back]]'', he is shown to be a bit of a philosopher. In ''Mewtwo Strikes Back'', he and his clone (in addition to Pikachu) were the only Pokémon not to participate in the giant battle, Meowth remarking (in the dub) that the originals and the clones shared the same air, moon, and planet, giving them common ground. Meowth comforted [[Ash's Chimchar]] in ''[[DP053|Tears For Fears!]]'' and actually expressed some admiration for Ash and his friends, commenting, "You [Chimchar] have buddies who'd give you the shirt off their backs if you needed one." On a few occasions, Meowth has become stranded with Pikachu, and during these times, the two work together fairly well. Pikachu distrusts Meowth for obvious reasons but Meowth is more willing to let go of the past and work together. Usually, by the end of these episodes, Meowth will betray Pikachu once they find Jessie and James. Another trait Meowth shares with Ash's Pikachu is that they have a huge rivalry with their evolved forms, {{p|Persian}} and {{p|Raichu}}, respectively.

Meowth is an amorous cat, developing crushes on occasion (obviously not as much as [[Brock]], but still a fair amount). Objects of his affections include [[Cassandra]] the (human) herbalist, the aforementioned Meowzie, {{TP|May|Skitty}}, and another {{p|Skitty}} in ''[[H009|Big Meowth, Little Dreams]]''. He also has demonstrated aspirations of being a parentlike caretaker, coddling {{TP|Misty|Togepi}}'s egg before fighting for custody of it only to finally lose it to [[Misty]]. To regain custody of Togepi, he even defeated [[Brock's Onix]] by throwing a bucket of water in its face and finishing it with a Fury Swipes attack to the head.

He has also, since late [[Johto]], had frequent [[Boss fantasy|fantasies]] about presenting Giovanni with various Pokémon. These fantasies often involve whatever creature it happens to be assisting Giovanni in his daily routine.

Much like [[Ash's Pikachu]], Meowth does not stay inside a [[Poké Ball]], and it is never mentioned if he was ever captured by either member of Team Rocket he travels with. Strangely, though he first appeared in the second episode, in an era where {{Ash}} scanned nearly every Pokémon he came into contact with with his [[Pokédex]], it took until ''[[AG109|Do I Hear a Ralts]]'' for Ash to do this to Meowth. However, this was a mere accident: Meowth was dressed up like a {{p|Kirlia}}, and Ash had never seen one before. In ''[[DP002|Two Degrees of Separation]]'', {{an|Dawn}}, unlike Ash, scanned him right away. She also made the same mistake as Ash when she scanned Meowth as a {{p|Shiftry}} in ''[[DP014|Leave it to Brocko!]]''. Also in the episode ''[[EP084|The Lost Lapras]]'' the character [[Tracey Sketchit|Tracey]] started examining Meowth (despite not having a [[Pokédex]]), but only because he was interested in the fact that he could talk.

Meowth normally does not battle unless there are extreme circumstances; his explanation is that his ability to talk and walk upright came at the expense of battling ability. However, when forced to fight, Meowth is fairly resourceful, such as dumping a bucket of water on an {{p|Onix}} to weaken it. In [[DP103]], however, Meowth fought extremely well, even knocking out {{an|Jun}}'s [[Empoleon]] with {{m|Scratch}}, which normally wouldn't do much damage. Yet just two episodes later, in [[DP105]], Meowth was unable to break a display case using the same attack.

== Synopsis ==
After his battle with the {{p|Spearow}}, {{AP|Pikachu}} is badly injured, {{Ash}} is told by [[Misty]] about a place where he can take Pikachu to be healed, a {{g|Center}}. They head to the [[Viridian City]] Pokémon Center to be healed. When entering the town, Ash is stopped by [[Officer Jenny]], who finds him suspicious, due to the fact he is carrying Pikachu in his arms and not a Poke Ball, but Ash confirms his identity with his [[Pokédex]], Jenny then rushes Ash to the Pokémon Center. Misty enters in the Pokémon Center with her destroyed bike, angry because it was Ash's Pikachu that did it. Ash explains that Pikachu is injured badly, and Misty forgets about her bike and instead thinks of Pikachu. As Pikachu is treated, Ash feels crestfallen and calls home. His [[Delia Ketchum|mother]] tries to encourage him, but he still feels downtrodden. He is then called by [[Professor Oak]] who is surprised that he reached Viridian so soon. Ash then tells him about [[Ho-oh (anime)|the golden colored flying Pokémon he saw earlier]] (in the [[EP001|last episode]]). Oak feels that he is lying because many trainers have never seen that Pokémon even after searching for it during their whole life! They then exchange good wishes and hang up.

Meanwhile, two 'wanted' posters are revealed, showing the pictures of two 'Most Wanted criminals', [[Jessie]] and [[James]] of [[Team Rocket]]. The two trouble makers spot the posters and swear vengeance on Viridian for putting up wanted posters of them. Their ally {{MTR}} is then revealed to be their [[Pokémon]].

While Pikachu is being treated, Team Rocket attack the Pokémon Center with the intent of stealing the Pokémon inside. The Center's [[Nurse Joy]] tries to transfer all Pokémon to the safety of the [[Pewter City]] Pokémon Centre, because it is an emergency. Team Rocket use their [[Jessie's Arbok|Ekans]] and [[James' Weezing|Koffing]] to wreck havoc in the Center. However, just then Pikachu somehow manages to revive itself and along with the other Pikachu from the Center's back-up power generator, {{m|ThunderShock}} Team Rocket away.

Officer Jenny arrives too late as Team Rocket manages to escape in their Meowth shaped balloon. They agree that Pikachu would make a great gift for their [[Giovanni|boss]] and decide to steal it when the chance comes.

Ash leaves Viridian City and heads for the [[Viridian Forest]] with a revived relation with Pikachu and Misty in tow. Spotting a {{p|Caterpie}}, he attempts to capture it.

== Synopsis ==
Dawn and her new Piplup are relaxing in a field after their tiresome morning. A wild Buneary pops out of the grass. Dawn scans it with her Pokédex and is eager to capture it. Piplup attacks it with a {{m|BubbleBeam}}, but Buneary strikes back with a {{m|Tackle}}. Piplup is knocked out and Buneary bounces off Dawn's head and hops away.

Traveling through the forest on her bike with Piplup in the basket, Dawn consoles it - they'll have better luck next time. Dawn then spots a Burmy hanging from a tree above and decides next time is now! Piplup attacks with another BubbleBeam but the Burmy drops from the tree, scaring it senseless. Dawn comforts Piplup and grabs a [[Poké Ball]]. She is about to throw it but realizes Burmy has gone. Dawn reassures Piplup that they will just have to try again later.

But Dawn and Piplup are stunned when a tired and injured Pikachu (Ash's), stumbles out of a hedge and collapses. Dawn scans it and sends Piplup into battle. Unfortunately Piplup attacks her. She tosses a Poké Ball at Pikachu, but is stunned when Pikachu isn't pulled into the ball. Before she can question why, a Cacnea, Seviper and Dustox lunge out of the bush, followed by a Meowth. Dawn is stunned to hear it talk - her Pokédex doesn't say it can. Jessie and James, with Wobbuffet and Mime Jr., also appear, thrilled to have finally caught Pikachu. Pikachu however, launches a {{m|Thunderbolt}}, barbecuing Team Rocket and Dawn's bike. Seviper, Cacnea, and Dustox advance on Pikachu. Dawn, warning Team Rocket to leave it alone, asks who they are. Team Rocket say their motto, and realize that they are in Sinnoh, James' old home. Pikachu cowers behind Dawn and she tells Piplup to attack. Seviper wraps itself around Piplup, squeezing it tight. Piplup attacks it with BubbleBeam, releasing its grip. Team Rocket won't give up and their Pokémon attack. Pikachu fires a Thunderbolt and Team Rocket are sent blasting off. It then collapses into Dawn's arms.

Dawn takes Pikachu to the Pokémon Center, where Nurse Joy tells her it will be fine. She makes a video-phone call home to her mom, who watches in dismay as Dawn and Piplup argue and fight about who saved Pikachu. She then calls Professor Rowan to tell him her story.

Meanwhile in the forest, Ash has had Aipom in the trees looking for Pikachu, but there's no luck. Dejectedly, they both sit down when Officer Jenny rides past on her motorbike. She offers to give them a lift to Twinleaf Town, which Ash accepts.

At the lab, Ash tells the Professor that he has lost his Pikachu and the Professor realizes it must be the same one Dawn found. He and Ash call the Pokémon Center, where Ash is happy to learn his Pikachu is okay. He and Aipom set off right away.

Walking through the forest, Team Rocket ponder whether to contact the boss. Noticing a grand mansion of James' family's, they dash inside to look around. They stumble upon James' old playroom, where a single small chest sits. James' eyes light up as he realizes what is inside (Jessie of course hopes for riches), but it is his old bottlecaps, and a Poké Ball. James explains that it holds an old friend. The ball opens, revealing a Carnivine that chomps down on his head in affection.

Dawn is back on the road with Piplup and Pikachu, and Ash is still making his way to the Pokémon Center. A large truck pulls up alongside him and stops. The passenger seat opens and someone jumps out. It's Brock! The girl driving the truck asks Brock if this is the guy he was looking for and Brock whispers to Ash that he might have a chance with her. A phone call from her 'male friend' drops Brock's fantasies down a peg or two. She drives off and Ash explains the situation about Pikachu.

Aipom swings through the trees, accidentally smashing into a Starly. Ash scans it with his 'Dex. Ash is eager to capture it and pulls out a Poké Ball, but before he can throw it, Starly whips up a {{m|Gust}}. It then slams into Aipom with a {{m|Quick Attack}}, but Aipom fights back, knocking it back with {{m|Focus Punch}}. Ash throws the Poké Ball and Starly is captured! Ash looks at the ball, realizing that it's no fun without Pikachu. He lets Starly out, telling it to find Pikachu. Starly flies off into the distance as Ash and Brock follow it. Will Ash see Pikachu again?

Raichu is a rather small bipedal rodent. It's able to run faster on all fours. Like Pikachu, from which it evolves, Raichu has long ears and feet, and stubby arms. Also like Pikachu, Raichu has two horizontal brown stripes on its back. Its long, thin tail has a broad, lightning bolt-shaped end.

Raichu is yellow-brownish in color, with a white belly. Its arms are halfway brown, as well as its feet. The soles of its feet are tan colored. Its bifurcated ears are brown on the outsides and yellow on the insides, and end in a distinctive curl at their bottom-most point. Its cheek sacs are yellow.
